An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Accountant to join a highly respected Trustee business based in the heart of Sydney CBD. This role offers you the chance to manage a diverse portfolio of clients, where your expertise will directly contribute to investor protection and risk minimisation within the Australian debt capital markets. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, while also supporting continuous improvement initiatives and providing guidance to junior team members. Enjoy flexible working opportunities, exposure to high-profile transactions, and the chance to work alongside knowledgeable professionals who are committed to your ongoing development.
As a Senior Accountant in this Agency & Trustee business based in Sydney CBD, you will play an integral role in managing a varied portfolio of retail and corporate clients. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve overseeing compliance with trust documents and regulatory requirements while protecting investors' interests through diligent assessment of client solvency. You will collaborate closely with both internal teams—such as legal, risk management, finance—and external stakeholders including auditors and regulators. By providing guidance on complex transactions and supporting Associates' development through training initiatives, you will help foster a collaborative environment focused on continuous improvement. Your ability to analyse financial statements thoroughly will be essential as you monitor client performance and prepare detailed reports for senior leadership. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives on responsibility and enjoys building strong professional relationships while contributing meaningfully to investor protection.
- Manage a portfolio of clients and matters within the Trustee business, ensuring all trustee powers and obligations are discharged in line with policies, procedures, trust documents, and relevant legislation.
- Devise and implement strategies for distressed or insolvent clients by conducting thorough deal reviews and negotiating documentation with clients or third parties.
- Oversee clients under external administration by maintaining regular communication with Senior Management regarding any issues or potential risks that may arise.
- Lead adherence to established policies and procedures for the retail portfolio while driving continuous improvement through policy simplification and enhanced client management strategies.
- Provide day-to-day assistance and training to Associates involved in 2L activities, fostering a supportive learning environment within the team.
- Build strong relationships with clients, external service providers, regulators, auditors, solicitors, and other stakeholders to ensure prompt responses to all reasonable requests.
- Manage complex transactions by negotiating documentation terms, minimising legal and operational risks, highlighting onerous clauses, and seeking guidance from Senior Managers when necessary.
- Conduct regular financial statement analysis—including profit & loss reviews, balance sheet assessments, and cash flow forecasts—to evaluate client solvency and performance.
- Develop action plans for monitoring requirements of portfolio clients through scheduled weekly, monthly, quarterly, biannual, or annual reviews as needed.
- Prepare comprehensive board papers (half yearly) and committee meeting documents (monthly), ensuring accurate reporting in accordance with internal policies.
To excel as a Senior Accountant in this Trustee Financial Services business located in Sydney CBD, you will bring proven experience from roles involving insolvency practice or audit functions—ideally within capital markets or financial institutions. Your educational background will include a relevant university degree complemented by CA/CPA qualifications or legal admission. You will have demonstrated success managing client portfolios under strict regulatory frameworks while maintaining open lines of communication with both internal colleagues (across legal/risk/finance) and external partners (including auditors/regulators/solicitors). Your analytical mindset allows you to interpret complex financial data accurately; meanwhile your interpersonal strengths help foster collaboration across multiple stakeholder groups. A commitment to ongoing learning—both personally and through mentoring others—will see you thrive in this supportive environment where continuous improvement is valued.
- CA or CPA qualification—or admission as a solicitor—demonstrates your commitment to professional standards within the industry.
- At least three years' experience working in insolvency, audit, business services or within a financial institution gives you practical insight into capital or securities markets.
- A deep understanding of Australian debt capital markets ensures you can navigate ongoing regulatory developments confidently.
- Proven experience managing client portfolios within financial services highlights your ability to handle complex matters efficiently.
- Strong analytical skills enable you to conduct detailed financial statement analysis—including P&L reviews—and assess business activities effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills allow you to build positive relationships with clients as well as internal teams such as legal or risk management.
- Experience liaising with external auditors, regulatory bodies (such as ASIC), solicitors or insolvency practitioners demonstrates your collaborative approach.
- Familiarity with preparing board papers or committee meeting documents showcases your attention to detail in formal reporting environments.
- A proactive attitude towards continuous improvement means you are always seeking ways to enhance processes or simplify policies.
