Cyber Security Engineer – Canberra, ACT

Approach is partnering with a highly respected Canberra-based private sector organisation to find an experienced and Cyber Security Engineer ready for their next step.

This isn't your standard tiered SOC role, you'll have genuine ownership of key tools, processes, and outcomes. You'll work directly with clients and internal teams, making strategic decisions that improve security posture and drive real change.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Own and act as SME for at least two core security platforms, ensuring they're delivering maximum value.
  • Run vulnerability assessments with tools like Tenable or Nessus and lead remediation efforts.
  • Create clear, executive-ready reports from logs, timelines, and other data sources.
  • Standardise and improve security toolsets, bringing consistency and efficiency to operations.
  • Identify task ownership, gaps, and opportunities for automation or escalation to guide resourcing decisions.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on audit and remediation projects, adding technical depth and solutions.
What You'll Need
  • 12+ months of hands-on SOC experience (we're looking for proven capability, not a helpdesk step-up).
  • Strong knowledge across Microsoft 365, Azure Security Centre, Azure, and/or AWS security best practices.
  • Experience with vulnerability management tools such as Tenable or Nessus.
  • Familiarity with SIEM tools like Splunk or Azure Sentinel.
  • Skilled in producing security reports that bridge technical depth with executive readability.
  • Experience setting up or standardising security tools or processes.
  • Bonus: MSP experience, plus working knowledge of Windows Server (2008–2022), Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, and networking fundamentals (CCNA or equivalent).
