About the role

The Director Strategy, Economic, Insights and Reporting, Strategic Insights plays a pivotal role in setting AFSA's enterprise direction by leading the development of long-range strategy, delivering enterprise reporting, integrating performance intelligence and providing robust, system-level advice to guide agency decision-making.

Leading the Strategy, Economics, Insights & Reporting team, the role brings together strategic foresight, planning, engagement and enterprise reporting and messaging into a consolidated capability that supports the CEO, Executive and broader leadership cohort. The role provides a helicopter view across key strategic functions, connecting disparate data, planning and delivery activities into a unified, insight-rich performance narrative.

Key accountabilities
  • Lead the development and integration of AFSA's long range enterprise strategy and planning frameworks.
  • Delivery high-quality internal and external reporting, including the Corporate Plan.
  • Interpret complex data and policy signals and provide system-level advice to guide agency positioning.
  • Offer authoritative guidance on economic trends, and the feasibility and implications of strategic directions.
  • Develop insights to inform strategic messaging and support the communication of AFSA's vision and outcomes.
  • Establish and continuously improve enterprise performance measurement and evaluation frameworks.
  • Provide strategic foresight through scenario modelling and risk-informed planning.
  • Steward AFSA's insight ecosystem – connecting data holders, surfacing strategic questions and reducing duplication.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and the academic community to publish research that contributes to policy debate and establishes AFSA as a thought leader in regulation and financial services.
  • Partner with agencies such as Treasury, Finance, and APSC to ensure AFSA is positioned to respond to and influence national policy agendas.
  • Represent AFSA in external forums and participate in relevant communities of practice to ensure the agency remains informed of best practices in data analytics and economic modelling.
  • Build strategic capability across the organisation by modelling analytical rigour, collaboration, and clear direction.
  • Lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team with a shared commitment to integrity, evidence based decision-making, and public service outcomes.

Travel will be a requirement for the role.

Qualifications and experience
  • Post-graduate qualifications in economics, strategy, data science, business administration or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in public sector strategy, performance reporting or regulatory reform.
  • High-level critical thinking and policy modelling capabilities.
  • Strong track record in senior stakeholder engagement and executive advising.
  • Demonstrated established credibility in both domestic and international forums.
  • Proven capability to lead and integrate cross-functional teams in fast-paced, high-trust environments.
