About The Role

As our Automation and Systems Electrical Engineer at the Newcastle Rod Mill, you'll be responsible for maintaining and improving our MES Automation Layer and other critical automation systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.

Working closely with cross-functional teams in production, maintenance, and process improvement, you'll troubleshoot breakdowns, implement system upgrades, and drive automation improvements that enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.

You Will
  • Provide technical support for PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, sensors, drives, and advanced instrumentation
  • Troubleshoot breakdowns and investigate root causes to drive long-term reliability improvements
  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, and process teams to optimise control and tracking systems
  • Assist in implementing machine learning, vision systems, and other digital transformation initiatives
  • Support system upgrades and ensure all changes are well-documented and aligned with business standards
  • Contribute to the development of maintenance strategies and manage critical spares and system documentation
  • Work across MES system interfaces (including PSI and SAP EWM) to ensure seamless production tracking

To succeed in this role, you'll bring strong technical expertise in industrial automation and control systems, with a proactive and hands-on approach to problem-solving. Your ability to communicate, collaborate, and adapt will help you thrive in a high-performance team environment.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • A degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineering (or a related field)
  • Experience working with industrial control systems (PLCs, HMIs, SCADA)
  • Safety as a core value. Understanding of legislative safety requirements (the need to provide safe systems of work)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and a methodical approach to root cause analysis
  • Familiarity with MES systems, process automation, or data-driven technologies (desirable)
  • The ability to adapt to change and manage competing priorities
  • A passion for continuous improvement and digital innovation
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams
