Rare Cancers Australia is a flexible, equal-opportunity employer. We are a growing organisation with a professional, friendly and supportive team. We have a genuine, caring and positive culture and working environment and provide access to further training and career development opportunities.

Excellent long-term opportunity for a committed, caring and experienced Health Promotion Officer who has exceptional customer service skills and an empathetic personality.

About The Role

Rare Cancers Australia provides a dedicated Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program, delivered primarily via phone and telehealth, to support individuals diagnosed with rare cancers. Our specialist cancer navigators work closely with patients and their families to provide guidance, information, emotional support, and practical assistance throughout their cancer journey. This service helps patients access treatment, navigate complex health systems, manage travel and accommodation challenges, and feel less isolated.

As the Education and Engagement Officer, you will play a key role in extending the impact of this service — raising awareness of RCA's programs, delivering health education, and building strong relationships with patients, carers, health professionals, and the wider community. Through your work, more Australians living with rare cancers will know how to access the support they need when they need it most.

Reporting to the Education and Outreach Manager within the Patient Support Team, the Education and Engagement Officer will play a pivotal role in delivering education and engagement initiatives that raise awareness of rare and less common cancers, improve understanding of patient and carer experiences, and support access to information, services and advocacy.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include The Following
  • Research, develop and implement education and engagement strategies.
  • Identify key messages and communication channels to reach and engage diverse audiences effectively.
  • Tailor health promotion strategies to meet the needs of priority populations.
  • Deliver and facilitate engaging education and training sessions for patients, carers, health professionals, organisations, and community groups.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organisations, patient advocacy groups, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders.
  • Actively engage with and consult patients, families and community groups.
  • Organise community events, workshops and educational sessions and represent RCA at interstate forums and conferences as required.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of education and engagement initiatives.
  • Generate regular reports for internal stakeholders.
  • General project support, including communication and outreach activities, and working closely with and supporting the Education and Outreach Manager and Project Manager on relevant projects.

This role is offered with a maximum term of up to the 30th of June 2027, aligned with government funding. However, opportunities for extension or permanency may arise during the contract term.

About Us

Rare Cancers Australia (RCA) is a leading advocacy and support organisation dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by rare cancers. Our mission is to provide support, raise awareness, and drive research initiatives to address the unique challenges individuals diagnosed with rare cancers and their families face. We value a caring, enthusiastic and collaborative workplace and aim to ensure team members have the support they need to be at their best.

About You

This role requires a dynamic and empathetic individual with an understanding of the health sector, patient support, and the unique challenges faced by people affected by rare and less common cancers.

The ideal candidate will be skilled in developing effective education strategies and resources and confident in delivering engaging sessions to diverse audiences. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, along with the ability to tailor messages for different cultural contexts and accessibility needs.

Experience working with priority populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, rural and remote communities, and culturally and linguistically diverse groups, will be highly regarded.

A collaborative approach and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for people living with rare and less common cancers will be key to success in this role.

Why Join Rare Cancers Australia

At Rare Cancers Australia, you will have the opportunity to be part of a dedicated team working towards a meaningful cause. You will play a vital role in raising awareness, advocating for change, and providing support to individuals and families affected by rare cancers. This is your chance to make a real difference and contribute to improving outcomes for those facing rare cancer diagnoses.
