Role Purpose

This position will support survivors of family violence to navigate financial hardship and financial wellbeing. Financial counsellors provide intensive support through an in-depth face to face or phone/video assessment of a person's financial situation, case work, advocacy, and the identification of options to address financial concerns. Financial counsellors may undertake a triage process, prioritising and referring clients to other sources of support and assistance as necessary and work closely with other services through consultation and cross referral. Financial counsellors always support the person's fullest participation and empowerment in planning and decision-making using a trauma Informed approach.

The role will also contribute to the development of Good Shepherd and to the broader Financial Counselling services and capability work, and to the broader GSANZ objectives. Periodic attendance at agency functions and events will be required; and compliance with GSANZ policy, procedure and code of conduct is always expected.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality financial counselling to clients with diverse and complex needs, including those experiencing financial abuse or family violence.
  • Apply trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and empowerment-based approaches to support clients in achieving their financial goals.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and leadership to contribute to strategic and operational outcomes for Client Services.
  • Advocate and negotiate on behalf of clients with financial institutions, service providers, and external dispute resolution agencies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and financial counselling practices, and provide accurate advice to clients.
  • Build and maintain strong networks with external agencies and within the financial counselling sector to support client outcomes.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and compliance with organisational standards, reporting requirements, and professional registration.
  • Participate in service delivery across multiple modalities, including phone, video, in-person, and co-location sites.
  • Represent the service in professional forums and working groups, contributing to systemic advocacy and sector development.

About You
  • Minimum Diploma level qualifications in financial counselling
  • Minimum 2 years Financial Counselling experience
  • Experience working with vulnerable and at-risk clients.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to implement trauma informed approaches to practice
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in domestic and family violence and financial abuse financial counselling including risk assessment.
  • Demonstrated capacity to have effective, person-centred conversations with people from diverse cultural, gender, social and economic backgrounds
  • Significant experience in the provision of face to face, phone and video intake, assessment and case work.
  • Understanding of and experience in service provision of financial counselling, financial literacy development, advocacy, and referral
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
