Overview

Caxton Community Legal Centre is one of Australia's oldest and most respected community legal centres. Its vision is for a just and inclusive Queensland. Our 80 staff, supported by hundreds of volunteers, assist over 20,000 people per annum. Our services are delivered through a multidisciplinary model that integrates legal, social, and community responses to complex problems. Caxton is also a recognised leader in legal education, systemic advocacy and law reform – influencing positive change at the individual, community and policy level.

Caxton has a well-developed Towards 2032 Strategy and a First Nations Justice Strategy. It has achieved a stable financial position. It has come through a significant period of growth and is now entering an important phase of consolidation: strengthening our internal systems, embedding innovation, and focusing on long-term sustainability. This includes refining our governance, advancing digital and data capability, diversifying revenue streams, driving change by raising public awareness and demonstrating the impact of our work, and ensuring service excellence across our multidisciplinary model.

Expressions of Interest

We are seeking Management Committee members who can help steward this next chapter with strategic clarity, sector insight, and a shared commitment to social justice.

Candidates must have:

  • a deep understanding of equity, inclusion and community need;
  • strategic thinking skills;
  • strong judgment and integrity;
  • curiosity; and

In addition, candidates should bring expertise or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • philanthropy, social enterprise, fundraising strategy, corporate partnerships or grant- making (to help Caxton strengthen its long-term financial sustainability);
  • responsible technology, digital strategy, or artificial intelligence in the context of service delivery, organisational efficiencies, and rights-based governance;
  • outcomes measurement, data analytics, data strategy, evaluation or social impact reporting to help Caxton better demonstrate and improve the value of its work;
  • client-centred service models, quality improvement frameworks, or human-centred design in community, legal, health or social services;
  • governance and risk management;
  • health / mental health;
  • human services;
  • communications;
  • finance;
  • community development and cross-sector collaboration;
  • First Nations justice; and/or

We are particularly interested in individuals with experience or perspectives that complement our current Committee, including from First Nations communities, and diverse cultural, professional, and lived experience backgrounds.

You do not need to be a lawyer or have legal experience to hold a position on the Management Committee.

In addition to general committee members, we are also specifically looking for an experienced leader to take on the role of Treasurer.

What is involved?

The Management Committee meets approximately eight times annually (including bi-monthly meetings and for strategic planning and governance workshops).

Management Committee members are also expected to be part of at least one additional sub-committee and/or lead a particular project in addition to their general role.

The average time commitment for general committee roles is approximately 6 hours per month including meeting attendance and preparation and other ad-hoc activities.
