The role of the Indigenous Service Support Officer is to assist Youth Justice Service Centre staff to provide support and intervention services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people subject to youth justice intervention.

Identified Position

This role is designated as an Identified role for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples based on the genuine occupational requirements, in accordance with section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, and the Recruitment and Selection (Directive 07/23).

Role Specific/technical Skills

  • You understand the impacts of historical and contemporary policy and practices upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You have a demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively, and with humility, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Mandatory Requirements
  • Drivers' license: it is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold an unrestricted "C" Class driver's licence. Officers are required to drive government vehicles as a part of their day-to-day work.
  • This role is designated as Regulated employment as the position provides support services to children and young people and therefore will require a valid Blue Card to be linked with the organisation prior to starting. Please refer to the Blue Card Services website (http://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au/) for further information.
  • Additional pre-employment screening for this role includes serious disciplinary history disclosure, reference and qualifications check and eligibility to work in Australia.

Travel
  • While the position is based in Townsville, travel within the region for site visits and to other regional/departmental offices may be required in this role. This may include overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist and support youth justice staff and relevant community stakeholders in culturally appropriate assessment, case planning and interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families in accordance with relevant legislative provisions, statutory delegations, departmental policies, procedures, and contemporary best practice.
  • Implement culturally appropriate individualised case plans through designing and implementing intervention strategies, negotiating with service providers, and linking clients to the services/supports they require (including formal and informal services, government and non-government agencies).
  • Consult and effectively work with relevant stakeholders including families, elders, other key community members, community agencies and government departments to enhance the capacity of these stakeholders to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families subject to youth justice interventions and their families.
  • Undertake a range of record and information management tasks including maintenance of case notes and records, preparation of reports and performance reporting
  • Participate productively and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team involving a range of internal and external stakeholders and service providers to achieve quality casework outcomes.
  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
