Job Description:

Select Carbon is an end-to-end carbon service provider with over a decade of experience in working with landholders to develop, manage and report on carbon farming projects. Select Carbon provides options to land managers to integrate carbon projects into their farming business with a system- and science-based approach. In so doing, we aim to contribute to climate change action by supporting activities that increase carbon stored in vegetation or soil, empower people and strengthen land-based businesses.

Select Carbon was Shell's first acquisition globally for its Nature-Based Solutions business, which invests in agricultural land management as well as in forests, grasslands, wetlands and other natural ecosystems around the world to reduce emissions and capture CO2while benefiting productivity, biodiversity, and local communities.

What's the role

The Soil Carbon team in Select Carbon has an enviable set of skills and expertise across farming systems, agronomy, soil microbiology, precision agriculture, spatial analysis, remote sensing and soil sampling and analysis. Select Carbon has established robust processes for working with growers and their farm advisors to screen potential projects, conduct feasibility reports, develop land management strategies, track the implementation of Eligible Management Activities, and measure and monitoring soil carbon stocks for projects using the Soil Carbon Method in the ACCU Scheme.

In this role, the candidate will provide a lead point of contact to growers, their advisors, agribusinesses, regional farming and LLS/NRM groups and other interested parties. The successful candidate's reputation and connections will help build new business in the soil program. You will provide leadership and business development to the Soil Carbon program based on experience and reputation in the mixed farming agribusiness sector.

Select Carbon takes a strong position on ensuring our services lead to high-integrity carbon projects, by combining practical knowledge and experience of farming systems and farm businesses with an evidence- and science-based approach on practices to increase soil carbon without compromising on productivity. Projects are co-designed with growers and their farm advisors so that each project is firmly embedded in the goals of a farming business. Practice change for a carbon project should – and can – align, support or complement other productivity and profitability drivers of a farm business.

The role will be a leadership position with the Select Carbon's Soil Carbon team and will contribute to the broader Select Carbon business to achieve high-quality project delivery and compliance in a culture of continual improvement. The business aims to build trust with its customers (growers) and other stakeholders (including regulatory and industry bodies).

What you'll be doing

Your primary objectives are to:

  • Build new business for the Soil Carbon program.

  • Provide a key point of contact for Select Carbon with the mixed farming sector and associated supply chains and finance sectors.

  • Advocate for practical and science-based carbon projects that can produce high-integrity carbon credits, and which support the core productivity requirements of a farm business.

  • Coordinate and interact with expert input from within Select Carbon and from external partners.

  • Represent the Select Carbon Soil Carbon program at events, forums and in written submissions, as required.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Business Development: Build new business and maintain open communication with prospective and current customers.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a reliable source of information, connecting Select Carbon with various stakeholders, including growers, advisors, and regulatory bodies.

  • Project Development: Provider leadership in the development of carbon projects, ensuring they are science-based and produce high-integrity carbon credits.

  • Data and Insights: Provide timely, high-quality data and insights to the Soil Carbon team and management.

  • Relationship Management: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, customers, and external partners to optimise project performance.

  • Team Leadership: Lead and support the Soil Carbon team in communication, setting priorities, and providing information to landholders.

  • Professional Development: Promote continuous improvement, uphold HSSE values, and be willing to travel for representation and participation in events.

What you bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary education in Agribusiness, Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil Science, Agro-ecology, or equivalent

    • Additional qualifications or experience in Project Management (or similar) or Business Development/Business Administration highly valued

    • Driver's License with 4WD experience and first aid training (driver training and first aid training will be provided by the employer as a requirement of the position.

    • Knowledge and experience of mixed farming business and related agribusinesses with significant years of post-graduate experience.

    • Strong existing network in agribusiness with the capacity to grow it, and an approach that builds and retains trust among customers and stakeholders.

    • Knowledge and experience of carbon farming, the ACCU Scheme, and understanding of production systems and environmental constraints.

    • Willingness and capability for regional work and associated travel.

    • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience in implementing practice changes in mixed farming systems to drive agricultural productivity, carbon sequestration, and sustainability reporting.

    • Proven ability to work independently, support team performance and professional development, and demonstrate resilience and perseverance in dealing with uncertainty.
