These positions sit within the Ipswich Compliance Centre in the Energy Extractive and Southwest Compliance branch. Senior Environmental Officers work to improve the State's environmental performance by identifying environmental risks and providing scientific and technical support for a wide range of projects.

Senior Environmental Officer's role includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Undertake compliance and enforcement activities under legislation administered by the department including the Environmental Protection Act 1994, Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 , Queensland Heritage Act 1992, Planning Act 2006 and Coastal Protection and Management Act 1995 .
  • Lead and support preventative and targeted compliance activities, including planning and conducting compliance inspections primarily centred around industry and development, such as inspecting commercial and industrial facilities and mine and quarry sites, undertaking field work including in remote locations, sometimes working at heights and in noisy and dusty environments.
  • Contribute to understanding compliance trends to make recommendations for targeted compliance programs.
  • Undertake enforcement activities including planning, gathering evidence to support enforcement actions and making recommendations on environmental issues to management or the delegate in accordance with contemporary Administrative Decision-Making Principles, ESR's Regulatory Strategy and departmental

Enforcement Guidelines
  • Contribute to identifying, analysing and designing solutions for complex environmental issues (environmental problem solving).
  • Provide expert advice, guidance, and direction to less experienced staff, managing technically complex and contentious matters, for environmental problem solving.
  • Represent ESR in technically complex stakeholder and customer negotiations and communicate with influence to contribute to the resolution of contentious matters.
