Defence Digital Group (DDG) is responsible for shaping, delivering, and maintaining an integrated and scalable ICT environment, the Single Information Environment (SIE), to enable Defence to operate effectively in the digital age. The DDG Engineering Branch focuses on applying technological principles to develop, manage, and sustain digital systems and infrastructure within a scaled agile framework (SAFe). Our goal is to reduce complexity and costs, eliminate legacy systems to improve efficiency, and increase agility.

We are seeking a highly experienced and technical Network Engineer who will report to the Director of Network Engineering. This role involves leading the planning, design, and implementation of solutions related to Defence's networks, adhering to best practices for architecture, security, and performance. The role is crucial for the design, security, and ongoing enhancement of our network platforms across hybrid cloud, data centre, and on-premises environments. The Department plans to create merit pools to fill vacancies over the next 18 months.

This position is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known as the Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP), which provides a premium on top of the base salary for roles critical to Defence capability. For more information, please contact the designated contact officer.

About The Team

You will join a team of ICT professionals working on complex projects within the Military and Enterprise Systems Divisions of Defence Digital Group (DDG). These roles offer opportunities for technical expertise, mentorship, and coaching within a matrixed environment, with team members embedded into projects as needed.

As a Digital Engineer in DDG, you may:
  • Lead a team of ICT professionals with expertise in key technology platforms or products, or
  • Work independently as the technical SME on projects.

Our Ideal Candidate

As the Network Engineer, you will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience designing, building, and enhancing secure enterprise network and communication platforms, including WAN, LAN, SD-WAN, VPN, wireless, encryption, cross-domain solutions, and hybrid cloud connectivity.
  • Strong knowledge of secure network engineering practices, particularly in Defence or National Security environments, with technical leadership in network architecture, performance, and security.
  • High proficiency in network routing and switching protocols, firewalls, and security platforms.
  • A security-first mindset, ensuring compliance with Defence and Government standards to protect networks, systems, and data.
  • Experience with Cloud networking designs such as VPC, Subnets, Route tables, Transit Gateway, Route 53, Direct Connect, DNS, VNet, ExpressRoute.
  • Excellent documentation skills, including technical documentation, solution design artifacts, baselines, SOPs, training materials, and governance frameworks.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with security, application, data, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated platform capabilities.
