The Role

The Group Information Security Officer (GISO) leads the operational cybersecurity for the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), within the overall Defence cybersecurity framework. The role ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of DSTG's information assets are protected. It extends Defence ICT security capabilities with specialist cybersecurity expertise tailored to complex research environments.

About our Team

GISO is part of the Digital Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) team, which supports Defence Innovation, Science, and Technology through advanced ICT capabilities. GISO leads a team of 15 cybersecurity professionals covering key functions:

  • Cybersecurity risk and assurance, including development of the DSTG Information Security Management System (ISMS) and achieving formal Assessment and Authorization of DSTG's digital research systems to meet Australian Government and Defence standards, including ISO27001.
  • Cybersecurity technical capability, involving planning, development, integration, and deployment of advanced cybersecurity tools and methods to secure DSTG's research systems, including integration of Defence security capabilities.
  • Cybersecurity operations, including managing DSTG's cybersecurity incident response, developing advanced cyber skills and tools for threat hunting, log analysis, and vulnerability assessment. Collaboration across DSTG and Defence cybersecurity ecosystems is essential.
