In partnership with the Department of Sports, Racing, Olympic & Paralympic Games, we are excited to offer a fixed-term position to inspire youth, lead change, and shape the future

Cook Shire Council is seeking an enthusiastic and community-minded Sports and Recreation Officer to lead the Young People Shaping Futures initiative under the Youth Development Partnership Fund (YDPF). This is your chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people in the region—connecting them with their community and culture to foster positive change through sport and recreation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver three core youth programs: Active Sport, Basketball Leadership, and Outdoor Recreation & Culture.
  • Target at-risk youth aged 10–17 to reduce youth crime and support community connection, cultural safety, and personal growth.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualification in Sport & Recreation, Youth Work, Community Development, or a related field, or significant relevant experience.
  • Experience delivering sport and recreation programs for young people.
  • Ability to engage at-risk youth, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and community engagement skills.
  • Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Ability to manage diverse responsibilities and work independently in regional settings.
  • Current Working with Children (Blue Card), First Aid Certificate, and Queensland C Class driver's license.
  • Experience in local government or community organizations is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Cook Shire communities and youth support networks is desirable.

Tenure: Full-Time, 12-Month Fixed Term

Remuneration:

Queensland Local Government Industry (Stream A: Division 2, Section 1) Award – State 2017 – Level 4-5

$43.80 per hour. Penalty rates apply for weekend work.

Superannuation: 12% superannuation contributions
