Drive Grid Integration for Large-Scale Energy Storage Projects

Our client, a global leader in energy storage technology and services, is seeking an experienced Group Manager Grid Connections to drive their grid integration strategy and deliver world-class energy storage solutions across the Australian market.

Overview

As Group Manager Grid Connections, you'll lead grid connection activities across Australia, managing complex transmission and distribution network integrations for utility-scale battery energy storage systems. This is a senior leadership role that combines technical expertise with strategic vision, working at the intersection of cutting-edge energy storage technology and Australia's evolving electricity infrastructure.

You'll be responsible for managing grid connection processes from initial feasibility through to commissioning, ensuring seamless integration of their energy storage assets with Australian transmission and distribution networks. This role requires deep understanding of Australian electricity market operations, regulatory frameworks, and network technical requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership
    • Develop and implement comprehensive grid connection strategies aligned with their Australian market expansion
    • Lead cross-functional teams including engineering, commercial, regulatory, and project delivery specialists
    • Build and maintain strategic relationships with AEMO, transmission network service providers, and distribution businesses
    • Provide senior stakeholder management across customer, regulatory, and industry interfaces
      • Technical Excellence
        • Oversee grid connection studies, network impact assessments, and system integration analysis for large-scale battery projects
        • Ensure compliance with National Electricity Rules, Australian Energy Market Operator procedures, and network connection standards
        • Lead technical negotiations with network service providers on connection agreements, system strength requirements, and performance standards
        • Drive innovation in grid integration approaches, including virtual power plant configurations and grid-forming inverter applications
          • Commercial Management
            • Manage grid connection budgets, timelines, and commercial agreements across multiple concurrent projects
            • Lead negotiations on connection agreements, including capital contributions, ongoing network charges, and performance requirements
            • Collaborate with commercial teams on project feasibility assessments and pricing strategy development
            • Oversee external consultant relationships and technical advisory services
              • Regulatory and Compliance
                • Navigate complex regulatory frameworks including generator performance standards, system strength requirements, and market participation rules
                • Manage relationships with Australian Energy Regulator, AEMO, and state-based energy agencies
                • Lead regulatory consultation processes and industry working group participation
                • Ensure ongoing compliance with evolving grid codes and performance standards
                What You'll Bring
                • Minimum 10+ years in senior roles within Australian electricity industry, with specific grid connection expertise
                • Proven track record managing large-scale renewable energy or storage project connections (50MW+ projects)
                • Deep understanding of National Electricity Rules, AEMO procedures, and network technical standards
                • Experience with transmission network planning, system strength analysis, and network impact studies
                • Strong background in stakeholder management across network businesses, regulatory bodies, and commercial partners
                Technical Expertise
                • Advanced knowledge of power systems engineering, including fault level analysis, stability studies, and protection coordination
                • Experience with energy storage technologies, grid-forming inverters, and advanced grid integration solutions
                • Understanding of Australian electricity market operations, including energy and ancillary services markets
                • Familiarity with emerging technologies including virtual power plants, microgrids, and distributed energy resources
                Leadership and Commercial Skills
                • Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing technical teams
                • Strong commercial acumen with experience managing P&L responsibilities and budget oversight
                • Exceptional communication and presentation skills for senior executive and board-level interactions
                • Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects with competing priorities and tight deadlines
                Qualifications
                • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related technical discipline required
                • Professional Engineer registration (Engineers Australia) highly regarded
                • Advanced qualifications in project management, business administration, or related field advantageous
                • Professional development in regulatory frameworks, energy markets, or utility management preferred
