We are seeking people with experience engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse peoples and communities to support people and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds participate in the Census.
About the Census
The Census of Population and Housing (the Census) is the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia and tells the story of how we are changing. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.
The Census is run every five years. It's one of the largest and most important collections to count the number of people and houses in Australia.The Census asks questions about your age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education.It's used to estimate Australia's population, distribute government funds, and plan services for individuals, families and communities.
The next Census will be held in early August 2026.
About the role
The Census Engagement Manager, culturally and linguistically diverse role is critical to supporting people and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to participate in the Census.
Census Engagement Managers are usually required to work in a specific area which may be across multiple Local Government Areas.The Census Engagement Manager engages with community groups and organisations to raise awareness and maximise participation in the Census.
As a Census Engagement Manager, you will be responsible for the management of engagement activities across your region of Australia to contribute to high quality and relevant Census data.
Extensive engagement is conducted with communities and people from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This includes people who use a language other than English to raise awareness and encourage maximum participation in the Census.
Census Engagement Managers must have a sound understanding of the culturally and linguistically diverse landscape and the differing barriers faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds. This understanding is essential to effectively support the community in your region.
Fostering of positive relationships with key representatives within the culturally and linguistically diverse community and organisations is paramount. You will meet with a variety of community stakeholders, documenting key events and cultural considerations.
It is expected that Census Engagement Managers will assist in the implementation of Census activities designed to support participation in the Census, including for people from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds in specific regions. This may include promoting Census job opportunities and sourcing staff and coordinating in-person events such as Fill-in-Form and information sessions.
As a Census Engagement Manager, you will
·Be responsible for planning, managing and undertaking engagement activities tailored for culturally and linguistically diverse peoples and communities in your assigned region. This includes engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse communities, organisations, leaders and service providers.
·Develop and undertake culturally appropriate engagement for your assigned region.
·Assist in recruiting and training a team of field and engagement staff, emphasising cultural competence and sensitivity.
·Conduct field work with safety and care and ensure the safety and wellbeing of your team.
·Leverage your strong community connections to promote the Census and gather support for the Census from community organisations and service providers.
·Provide in-field Census assistance to the community when required, for example, assisted completion activities.
·Supervise and assist a team of field and engagement staff for procedural queries, as required.
·Be responsible for the storage of materials relating to the promotion of the Census and where required, store materials for a team of field and engagement staff working in your area.
Key qualities and experience:
·Experience working with and/or engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and knowledge of issues impacting these communities.
·Demonstrated experience/understanding working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
·Ability to connect and engage with a range of community organisations and service providers communicating effectively and developing strong working relationships.
·Ability to present information to groups of people through public speaking.
·Self-motivated and adaptable, capable of working independently and making informed decisions while respecting cultural and community dynamics.
·Demonstrated sound local area knowledge.
·Ability to lead and manage a team in a busy, high-volume environment operating with tight deadlines, while maintaining cultural safety and responsiveness.
·Ability to competently use information technology such as mobile devices and web applications.
·Ability to acquire an understanding of the Census and its processes, including work health and safety and handling personal information.
·Having strong connections across the culturally and linguistically diverse sector and the ability to leverage those relationships to assist in the promotion of the Census is highly desirable.
·The ABS may need staff who are able to speak in languages other than English, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, to support people to participate in the Census as part of our community engagement and in-person support initiatives. If you are proficient in any languages other than English, and confident in your ability to speak with others in the language(s) as part of your job, please list your languages in the Language section of your application.
