Today, as the rest of the world feels increasingly generic, our different-ness – our Tasmanian-ness – is among our most valuable assets. We invite you to be part of this special place, to quietly pursue the extraordinary, whether it be bushwalking, mountain biking or paddock to plate dining.

The rugged and beautiful North West Coast of Tasmania is a tourist mecca, has a strong agricultural sector, a developing innovative industrial sector and is positioned with airports and sea transport so it is very accessible to the rest of Tasmania and the Australian mainland. Air travel from Devonport to Melbourne is less than one hour.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Staff Specialist in Gastroenterology, who will work as part of the Department of Acute Medicine across the North West region.

The position involves management of patients in General Gastroenterology, IBD, chronic liver disease, and both diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopy. Experience in capsule endoscopy would be highly regarded.

This position will be attractive to a highly skilled and motivated medical professional who views challenges as opportunities and is driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems. The right applicant will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels.

The successful candidate will provide specialist diagnosis, treatment and care for public patients. They will provide a consultative service in Gastroenterology to other disciplines and to both hospitals within the Department of Health – North West.

Who are we?

Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the Department of Health – North West (DoH), has major sites located approximately 50km apart.

The medical services across the North West region of Tasmania are based primarily at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie and at the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) in Latrobe, close to Devonport. Gastroenterologists provide gastroenterology and Hepatology services across both sites with the base being MCH. The MCH is predominately outpatient and day surgery cases. The two hospitals both have very busy emergency and general medical departments. Both Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics are primarily located at the NWRH with outpatient services at both sites. Anaesthetic services are provided at both sites however the team is based at NWRH for on call purposes. A busy general surgical service is based at the NWRH with the MCH providing predominately day surgery cases. A rehabilitation service is located in a purpose built ward at the MCH. There are extensive outpatient services for a range of subspecialty services. There is also an eight bed Intensive Care unit located at NWRH. Onsite support services in pathology, imaging and pharmacy are extensive.

The North West Cancer Centre (NWCC) operates as a branch of the Northern Tasmania Cancer Service and it is linked with the Holman Centre in Launceston. The NWCC provides integrated oncology services to patients who live in North West Tasmania.

The North West Private Hospital is co-located with the North West Regional Hospital and this facilitates private practice for many of the region's specialists.
