The program

Reliable access to medical care is essential for everyone's health and independence.

Red Cross Patient Transport program supports older and vulnerable Australians who lack safe, regular transport to their non-urgent health appointments. Our door-to-door transport service helps clients achieve better health outcomes, reinforces their independence, and helps them remain safely in their own homes longer.

Red Cross Patient Transport runs on weekdays with regular weekly or fortnightly shifts. Our reliable, friendly volunteers help clients get to appointments on time, reduce travel stress, and support their independence.

The opportunity

We are looking for dependable volunteers who can relate to and empathise with a diverse range of people, including those from different cultural backgrounds and life experiences.

Key Requirements And Your Commitment
  • Be willing to join a nationwide team delivering social inclusion program within Aged and Community Care.
  • Operate our Red Cross vehicles to transport one or multiple clients per trip, locally and regionally, if required.
  • Provide a safe, courteous, and respectful transport experience
  • Ability to assist with mobility aids and safely help clients board and disembark (lifting up to 15 kg)
  • Engage in conversation and activities that are appropriate to the client or group.
  • Respect the privacy, rights, and dignity of clients and maintain confidentiality with respect to information obtained during the delivery of service.
  • Utilise appropriate digital systems and adhere to established work practices relevant to the program.
  • Record timely and appropriate documentation of your interactions with clients.
  • Maintain clear professional relationships and respect clear boundaries to safeguard the well-being of the client and yourself.
  • Participate in mandatory learning and development to keep your knowledge, skills, and practices up-to-date in the aged and community care sector.
  • Commit to upholding the principles outlined in the Aged Care Code of Conduct and any subsequent updates.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity by respecting diverse backgrounds and ensuring that all interactions are inclusive and free from discrimination

The impact

As a Red Cross Patient Transport volunteer, you'll remove one of the biggest hurdles to care—transportation—so clients can attend appointments that keep them healthy and independent. Your reliable service will increase clients' confidence in managing their health and support them to stay living safely in their own homes. In return, you'll gain fulfillment of enabling access to vital services, the satisfaction of making a difference in someone's day, and the opportunity to engage with Australia's diverse communities.

You'll be part of the Red Cross Aged & Community Care team that works to support older and vulnerable people across Australia through a range of volunteer-based programs.

Application Requirements
  • All volunteers will be required toundertakea National Police Check, which will be organised through Red Cross.
  • A current full Australian driver's licence and an excellent driving record.
  • Statutory Declaration to be completed if you have been a citizen or permanent resident of a country other than Australia after turning 16 years of age.
