The Program

Having good social connections is essential for health, especially as we age. The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) and Volunteer Visitors program support older Australians living in aged care facilities or at home who may be lonely or socially isolated. Volunteers are matched with older people, either one-on-one or in small groups, to provide friendship and companionship, enhancing their wellbeing and social connection.

As a visiting volunteer, you will make regular social visits to an older person in your community at an agreed day and time. Activities may include relaxed conversations, reminiscing over tea, or engaging in hobbies like playing cards or board games.

Opportunity requirements:

Good conversational skills and the ability to relate and empathise with a diverse range of older people, including those with different experiences, abilities, and cultures, are essential.

All volunteers must complete a National Criminal Check. Red Cross provides training, ongoing support, and access to other opportunities within its humanitarian network.

Impact of volunteering:

You will brighten the life of an older person experiencing loneliness by offering friendship and social connection. You will learn from their unique stories and knowledge, and they will learn from yours. This role offers personal satisfaction and the chance to build a meaningful friendship.

You will join the Red Cross Aged & Community Care team, supporting older and vulnerable people across Australia through various volunteer programs.

Application requirements:

Completion of a National Police Check, organized through Red Cross, is required.
