Robert Half Executive Search has been retained to identify an accomplished business leader for a newly created General Manager (GM) position with an established Australian company manufacturing an innovative modular building suite of products. The GM will partner closely with the CEO, Board and wider Leadership Team to successfully commercialise a newly created business unit with a significant growth agenda.

With strong market potential in Australia and projected revenues exceeding $100 million over the next 5 to 10 years, this is a unique opportunity to lead a dynamic, high-growth business. It will appeal to a commercially minded General Manager with a global perspective, eager to take on the challenge of scaling a new division.

Role

The successful candidate will have 5-10 years of hands-on leadership experience scaling businesses at pace in the commercial buildings and products, precast or structural modular/prefab building systems, formwork systems, or structural steel fabrication sectors.

Demonstrable experience overseeing operations and undertaking high-level business development, with a thorough understanding of business operations in a manufacturing environment, is essential, with International exposure an added bonus.

The General Manager will be responsible for defining, leading, and driving growth in this new business unit. They will establish the division from the ground up, leveraging existing corporate services for support. Key responsibilities include building a team to support an automated manufacturing facility and/or managing local and international licensing opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have gained experience in fabrication and will understand how to go from zero to a semi-automated, to fully automated factory set ups advancing the manufacturing capability from a position of almost zero production today to production at scale to meet demand.

In addition, the GM will have complete ownership over the go-to-market strategy for this division and will build a commercialisation plan to foster opportunities initially in the Australian Building sector. Partnering in strategy with the CEO, the successful GM will run this entity at a grassroots level, maintaining the high standard of the already established wider company ensuring the business is set up for sustainable growth.

This individual will be a tenured manager with proven experience in a high-level leadership position (GM/MD/Director) in a standalone scaling business, or a division of a large business. Additionally, a technical understanding of engineering concepts would be highly advantageous. Strong commercial capability, sales negotiation skills and the ability to deliver on profitability targets to grow a successful business will be critical.

A high degree of intellect, emotional intelligence, commercial judgement and sound decision-making will be required to effectively build this business from scratch and provide clear direction to all internal and external stakeholders. A highly analytical individual with both gravitas and humility will likely integrate well and thrive in this fast-paced business built on a culture of empowerment, accountability and innovation.

This role will suit an accomplished and commercially astute individual with proven leadership and business-building experience who will successfully drive business operations, inspire the team and achieve growth and financial targets.

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as manufacturing, engineering, mechatronics, construction management and/or business management.
• Proven end-to-end leadership of a whole business or a division of a more significant business.
• Full P&L responsibility at a GM level or as the head of a significant business unit and robust financial acumen to quantify the size of opportunities and strengthen negotiation position with potential partners or clients.
• Proven success in the Buildings market in Australia with a background in commercial buildings and/or precast/infrastructure/structural product fabrication / manufacturing sectors.
• Strong business development experience, particularly in the construction innovation and commercial buildings space.
• Prior go to market experience with a complex product is highly advantageous.
• Strong bids and tenders, contract negotiation and project management experience.
• Extensive leadership and experience, particularly in driving strategy in a fast-growing organisation.
• Proven success in global markets, navigating cultural differences and multi-language negotiation an advantage.
