HOPE has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental ill-health, youth justice issues, and socioeconomic disadvantage.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Youth Mentor Coordinator to join the Youth Justice service team in Leonora.
About the Opportunity :
The project will target young people aged 11 to 17 with a particular focus on Laverton, Leonora, and Leinster. It is anticipated that the project will reach more than 150 young people through the delivery of a suite of programs and activities across the region.
This is a fixed-term contract offering 76 hours per fortnight, Monday-Friday, with a fixed end date of 30th June 2026.
Young people will be identified and invited to participate in program activities from referrals from local schools, service providers, government agencies (such as police and shires), locally based Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, local elders, and community members.
Most participants (more than 80%) are expected to identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. All activities will be inclusive and accessible to all youth in the region, regardless of cultural background, gender, or ability.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Meet with the young person to build a relationship based on trust; discuss problems; and plan and facilitate programs tailored to the young person's needs, as identified in the YJS case plan (developed via the YJS YLS assessment tool).
- Provide information about services and resources; refer young people to appropriate specialist agencies; support sustained participation in services.
- Liaise with teachers, social workers, authorities, health professionals, refuge workers, and parents, when relevant to the young person's YJS case plan.
- Deliver evidence-based programs in primary prevention and early intervention within educational settings.
- Work closely with the Youth Justice Officer assigned to each young person to deliver and facilitate outcomes in four program areas:
o Rehabilitation : Criminogenic Treatment and Support,
o Emotional Wellbeing : Family & Community Engagement,
o Education, Training and Employment
o Life skills, Health, and Development
- Increase locally based sporting and recreational activities for young people.
- Enhance school attendance and educational achievement.
- Create more opportunities for young people to gain 'work-ready' skills and experiences.
- Use fortnightly reports and assessments to support and measure change in areas identified in the young person's YJS case plan.
- Collect quality data and statistics for monthly KPI reports and six-monthly funder reports.
Essential Criteria :
- Experience working with at-risk youth.
- A broad understanding of the challenges and experiences of people in regional Western Australia.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Current C or A class driver's license.
- Working with Children's Card.
- Police Certificate (within 3 months).
- Department of Justice Clearance.
Desirable Criteria :
- Experience working in regional and/or remote communities.
