Education Assistant - Special Needs role at Department of Education, Western Australia is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 4, 2025. West Northam Primary School (PS) is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Special Needs Education Assistant to join our team, with a keen interest in working in a dynamic school environment with a diverse student population.
The staff at West Northam PS are committed to providing the very best in teaching and learning to our students, and staff are supported in their journey to becoming effective educators capable of assisting to provide teaching and learning excellence in every classroom.
The Role- Demonstrate initiative, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to ongoing professional growth.
- Experience supporting students with challenging behaviours is highly regarded, particularly familiarity with Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and the 1-2-3 Magic and Emotional Coaching programs used across the school.
- Experience working with individuals or small groups to implement education plans, assess progress, and communicate outcomes to the classroom teacher.
- An understanding of a range of disabilities, including autism and severe mental health conditions, would be beneficial.
- Ideally be confident working independently to assist with classroom routines, prepare resources, and support student learning.
- The ability to assist with toileting and work with toileting plans in partnership with staff and families would be advantageous.
- Strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively with teachers, parents/carers, admin staff, and external agencies are also desirable.

Eligibility- be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.

- Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
- Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
- Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
