AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. Its purpose is to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are committed to achieving a net zero economy by 2050, and our vision is to support this transition. Join us as we contribute to this significant shift in the energy sector.
About the role
AEMO's Operational Support division plays a critical role in real-time electricity system operations across Australia. The division supports control rooms through high-quality data, systems, training, assessment, and operational planning advice. The Operational Forecasting team within this division is responsible for short-term forecasts that inform operational and market systems in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). These forecasts are vital for network outage planning, reliability assessments, and real-time operational decisions.
The team is recognized globally for leadership in short-term forecasting and is seeking to expand capabilities to address the increasing complexity of weather-dependent power systems.
What you will be doing
As an Analyst in the Operational Forecasting team, you will develop, implement, and improve forecast models for electricity demand, distributed photovoltaics (PV), and renewable energy generation to support AEMO's market systems in the NEM and WEM.
Your responsibilities include:
- Managing operational forecasting models for demand, rooftop PV, solar farms, and wind farms, including updating inputs and parameters to enhance performance.
- Collaborating with weather providers and control rooms to translate weather risks into system impacts and ensure operators have necessary information.
- Aligning tools, data, and forecasting processes across teams and markets in the NEM and WEM.
- Providing energy and weather insights for operational advisories, incident reviews, and market reports to support reliable power system operations.
- Supporting upgrades to forecasting applications and digital enhancements to improve system performance and reliability.
What you will bring to the role
- Tertiary qualifications in science, engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or related fields.
- Experience in the energy sector or similar industry, especially in operations, forecasting, or analytics.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in preparing reports and presentations for diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of data analysis and statistical modeling techniques, including PowerBI, Databricks, SQL, and Excel.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multiple projects and teams.
Benefits include:
- Flexible working arrangements, including remote work, part-time, job sharing, and hybrid options.
- Professional development opportunities through projects, networks, job rotation, and study assistance.
- Up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
- Performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
- Wellness programs, discounted health insurance, gym perks, and Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
Our commitment
At AEMO, we value diversity and inclusivity. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, neurodivergence, and Indigenous Australians. Please inform us of any accessibility requirements during the application or interview process.
