The Policy and Budget (P&B) Group at NSW Treasury serves as the primary liaison with NSW Government agencies, offering expert advice to the Treasurer and Cabinet Committees on financial management, policy reform, and resource allocation. This group helps maintain a robust and sustainable NSW economy by assessing financial risks and developing strategies and policies, and is instrumental in preparing and delivering the annual State Budget and Half-Yearly Review.
Within the P&B Group, the Budget Reform and Projects team works to identify opportunities for budget reform, ensuring policies and processes adhere to best practices and support the Government's fiscal objectives.
Your typical day-to-day as an Associate Director will involve researching and providing policy advice on public sector budget management and performance. You will build and maintain relationships within NSW Treasury and across the NSW Government to progress projects from concept to completion.
You will conduct both quantitative and qualitative research to formulate well-founded conclusions and craft recommendations for senior decision-makers. You will promote ongoing enhancements to policies and procedures, proactively identifying opportunities and conducting policy reviews. The team works collaboratively, and you will lead on individual projects or small project teams to deliver on key priorities.
As an Associate Director, you will manage 1-2 analysts to ensure learning and development objectives are met and priorities are delivered. You will contribute to broader capability building within NSW Treasury to support high-quality analyses and advice.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:
- Tertiary qualification in public policy, economics, accounting, finance, law or another related field.
- Sound understanding and professional experience in public sector financial management policy, including the annual budget process and whole-of-government budget management policies and frameworks.
- Ability to critically assess financial data and apply basic quantitative analysis techniques.
- Proven experience leading individual projects or policy development from concept to implementation.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision to deliver on results.
- Advanced ability to communicate policy or financial analysis clearly and effectively (verbally and in writing).
- Experience engaging, negotiating, influencing and exercising leadership with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience in leading, motivating and managing individuals or a small team of analysts.
- Ability and desire to work collaboratively as part of a team with strong interpersonal skills.
