Overview

Senior Infrastructure Engineer — Location: Canberra, ACT (Hybrid - initial 6 weeks onsite required). Initial Contract: 12 months. Extension Options: Up to 24 months. Clearance: Must be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1.

About the Role

Seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join its ICT Infrastructure team. In this role, you will design, manage, and maintain robust internet gateway and data centre networking environments that support critical government services.

You will exercise a high degree of independence and technical expertise, liaising with third-party providers, internal stakeholders, and interagency forums to ensure secure and reliable infrastructure operations. This role offers the opportunity to shape ICT strategy, mentor colleagues, and drive innovation in a highly visible government environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, evaluate, and implement infrastructure requirements to meet future demand.
  • Provide expert technical support for project build, test, and deployment activities.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design and implementation plans.
  • Advise senior executives on technical and strategic ICT matters.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, sharing expertise and knowledge.
  • Research emerging technologies and provide recommendations for adoption.
  • Engage with other agencies and service providers to enhance service delivery.
  • Manage operations including backups, high availability, and disaster recovery.
  • Oversee maintenance of patches, support packages, and network administration.
Essential Criteria
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in the design, management, and maintenance of internet gateways and/or large-scale data centre networking environments.
Desirable Criteria
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with F5/Blue Coat Layer 4-7 switching/load balancing and proxy systems.
  • Experience with Cisco Data Centre technologies (ACI, Routers, Nexus switches) and routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP).
  • Experience with Palo Alto firewalls, IPS solutions, VPN technologies, DNS/Infoblox, and email solutions.
  • Experience integrating hybrid/public cloud services and developing system architecture documentation.
  • Knowledge of Australian Government security frameworks, including the ASD ISM and Essential Eight.
Technical Skills
  • Cisco ACI, Routers, Nexus switches, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP).
  • Palo Alto firewalls and IPS solutions.
  • VPN, DNS (Infoblox), email solutions.
  • Hybrid and public cloud environments.
