Advanced Physician Training in Geriatric Medicine at Alfred Health

Alfred Health serves as the primary provider of health services to residents in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne and is a leading provider of specialist services across Victoria. The health service operates three facilities: The Alfred, Caulfield, and Sandringham Hospitals. The Health of the Older Persons department offers integrated and comprehensive services at all three sites. Trainees also have the opportunity to experience accredited training in the private setting at Cabrini Health.

We prioritize the education and training of advanced trainees by providing a supportive and stimulating environment. Each trainee will have a tailored program to gain clinical experience suited to their needs. Rotations at Alfred Health include a broad range of geriatric services such as:

  • Geriatric evaluation and management, including dementia and delirium wards
  • Community-based substituted inpatient geriatric evaluation and management (Better at Home)
  • Psychiatry of Old Age
  • Inpatient consultation service at Alfred Hospital, covering wards and emergency department
  • Ortho-geriatrics
  • Trauma geriatrics
  • Services provided by Cabrini Health, including private aged care practice and palliative care
  • Outpatient clinics: Continence, Falls, Wound, and Memory Clinics
  • Established Residential services (Mobile Assessment and Treatment Services - MATS)
  • Community ACAS visits
  • Rural rotation to Bass Coast Hospital

Our team of full-time and fractional physicians in Geriatric Medicine provides extensive supervision and is committed to research. Alfred Health is affiliated with Monash University and the South Eastern Training Alliance in the Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program.

In 2026, we are offering 14 accredited Geriatric Medicine Registrar training positions.

All advanced training positions are appointed through the centralized match for Geriatric Medicine in Victoria. Applicants for 2026 should apply to both Alfred Health and the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria Matching Service (PMCV).
