We're on the lookout for a Senior Data Governance Specialist to lead the charge in ensuring our data is trusted, secure, and strategically enabling our mission.

As a key member of the Data & AI team, you'll work across the organisation with technical teams and business stakeholders to embed data governance into our day-to-day operations and decision-making. You'll bring structure, rigour and collaboration to data governance by helping teams better understand and manage data across the lifecycle, from ownership and quality, to metadata, compliance and beyond.

You'll have responsibility for leading the development and execution of governance frameworks and helping ensure nib's data is well-defined, well-managed, and ethically used to improve outcomes for our members and partners.

What you'll be doing

  • Champion and implement enterprise data governance frameworks, policies and standards

  • Collaborate with data owners and stewards to embed governance in business processes

  • Drive metadata management and data cataloguing efforts using tools like Select Star

  • Define and monitor data quality rules, metrics and remediation plans

  • Support audit readiness, privacy compliance and risk mitigation efforts

  • Act as a subject matter expert for regulatory requirements including APRA CPG 235 and GDPR

  • Facilitate stewardship forums and uplift data literacy across the business

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of governance processes and platforms

You're a natural collaborator with a passion for data, governance and continuous improvement. With a background in data governance or management, you're comfortable navigating complex data environments, and you bring the right balance of technical knowledge, strategic thinking, and relationship-building skills.

You can translate policies into action and foster accountability across business and data teams.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in information management, Computer Science, Business or related field

  • 5+ years' experience in data governance, data quality, or metadata management

  • Strong knowledge of data stewardship frameworks and lifecycle management

  • Familiarity with metadata/cataloguing tools such as Select Star, Collibra or Alation

  • Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks such as GDPR or APRA CPG 235

  • Excellent communication, coaching and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Strong analytical mindset and documentation capabilities

Desirable:

  • Data governance certifications (e.g. DCAM, DAMA, CDMP)

  • Experience in insurance or regulated industries

  • Understanding of platforms like Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt

  • Participation in data stewardship or governance forums
