Suitably qualified applicants are invited to express their interest in short-term temporary/relieving opportunities as a Guidance Officer within the Far North Queensland Region. This continuous applicant pool is open to candidates that meet the mandatory requirements of the role as detailed in the attached role description. Engagements from this applicant pool will be for vacancies up to 6 months in duration. Applications may be reviewed and considered throughout 2025, if and when short-term temporary engagements are required. The submission of an application to this pool does not guarantee an offer of employment or an application assessment response. Salary rate shown is reflective of full-time (1FTE).

About The Role

As the Guidance Officer, you will have responsibility for the following:

  1. Advocate, provide counselling, psychoeducational assessment, and individual student support, recommendations, and advice to students, teachers, and parents concerning educational, behavioural, career development, mental health, and family issues.
  2. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team and facilitate effective working relationships and partnerships with parents, school personnel, and external support agencies to provide comprehensive support, case management, and referral services that optimize students' access and engagement in educational programs.
  3. Provide counselling and referral services to assist students in decision-making about critical educational, personal, social, emotional, and career development, and provide ongoing support during the implementation phase of their decisions.
  4. Conduct activities such as student observation and psychoeducational assessment to determine the nature of student learning difficulties, disabilities, developmental levels, or psychological and emotional status to make recommendations for educational adjustments and interventions.
  5. Assist schools in implementing student protection, gifted and talented education, behaviour support policies, and risk management processes, including developing individualised student plans such as Educational Support Plans.
  6. Provide specific support in secondary schools, including involvement in the Senior Education and Training (SET) planning, career development, and future pathway counselling.
  7. Balance ethical issues of privacy and confidentiality for each student with the appropriateness of sharing information, maintaining a comprehensive and professional record-keeping system compliant with policy and legal requirements.
  8. Participate in relevant professional development and prepare and implement skill development programs and in-service activities for administrators, teachers, and parents.
  9. Provide leadership and specialised support in response to student protection issues, critical incidents, emergencies, and the transition of students into alternative education programs and reintegration into mainstream schooling.
