NSW Health Pathology is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Dissection Scientist to join the Anatomical Pathology Department at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. The Anatomical Pathology Laboratory conducts tests for surgical patients across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley region. The role operates in a busy and dynamic environment. What You'll Be Doing

The Dissection Scientist is a specialist focusing on the pre-analytical and cut-up aspects of Anatomical Pathology. You will work as a member of the Anatomical Pathology team reporting to the SHS in Charge of Anatomical Pathology with accountabilities to the supervising Pathologist for specimen management including triage, direct transfer and dissection. You will also be the team leader for staff in the specimen reception and cut-up areas, overseeing the safe and efficient daily operation of that space.

  1. Qualifications and selection criteria (illustrative):

  • Bachelor Degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to Anatomical Pathology practice.
  • Post graduate study in specimen dissection and/or extensive proficiency performing non-complex and complex specimen dissection and direct transfer in a diagnostic anatomical pathology laboratory.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication and familiarity with terminology required for specimen dissection.
  • Initiative, self-directed approach, and commitment to ongoing learning and development.
  • Sound decision-making with regard to specimen handling and patient safety.
  • Experience working as a collaborative team member and autonomously, recognizing limits and escalation requirements.
  • Understanding of pre-analytical and specimen cut-up requirements in a diagnostic laboratory.
  • Flexibility to service and patient needs and commitment to quality and customer service improvement.
Other Information

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases: This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2024_015. Evidence against specified diseases may be required at applicant cost prior to appointment. The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a functional assessment prior to appointment.
