Apprentice Gardener

The Western Australian Turf Club (trading as Perth Racing) has a remarkable history of hosting thoroughbred horseracing for nearly 160 years. Perth Racing is a multi-faceted racing, entertainment and event business. At our two premier metropolitan tracks, Ascot Racecourse and Belmont Park, we host around 95 race meetings every year as well as frequent non-raceday events.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Gardener to join Perth Racing's Racecourse Team in January 2026 or at any time after completing your school year, if currently enrolled. This full-time apprenticeship position reports to the Racecourse Manager – Ascot, working Monday to Friday.

Working in a team with an experienced Gardener, this role is responsible for assisting in presenting and maintaining gardens and grounds at Ascot and Belmont Park Racecourses as well as Lee Steere House to the highest possible standard.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is keen to work outdoors in nature and has an interest in horticulture and conservation. You will gain the knowledge and practical skills to work effectively in garden settings during a four-year apprenticeship. You will work within a professional, friendly environment within beautiful grounds, in an exciting, fast paced Sport/ Event industry and receive a nationally recognised qualification on successful completion.

• Maintenance of garden beds and trees
• Use of irrigation systems and hand watering as needed
• Potting up and propagating new plants
• General pruning, planting, trimming and mulching
• Weed control (manual removal and minor herbicide use)
• Grass cutting (using walk-behind, ride-on and out-front mowers, edger's, blowers and brush cutters)
• Embarking on a 4-year apprenticeship on a fulltime basis
• Working towards the achievement of Certificate III in Parks and Gardens
• Course work, which will be undertaken at TAFE during day release classes
• On the job training, which will be gained through working alongside an experienced Gardener and the Racecourse Manager – Ascot at three facilities including Ascot and Belmont Park Racecourses and Lee Steere House.
• Performs work in a safe manner and in accordance with Perth Racing values and policies and procedures.
