An exciting opportunity exists to join the Illawarra Medical Network as a Basic Physician Trainee.

The Illawarra Medical Network (IMN) is the newest Basic Physician Training (BPT) Network in New South Wales, comprising Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Bulli hospitals. The Network embodies the CORE values of NSW health, emphasizing growth mindsets, respect for cultural diversity, and caring responsibilities. Its goal is to provide a balance between service provision and training, supporting trainees' growth into confident physicians while respecting individual circumstances. The Network aligns with NSW Health's HETI and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) policies.

We are affiliated with the University of Wollongong (UOW), collaborating on education and research. An academic suite at Wollongong Hospital supports the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at UOW. Trainees may supervise and teach medical students and participate in research projects within ISLHD and UOW.

The IMN structures training to meet RACP and HETI guidelines, offering a structured program for examination success and skill development across the three RACP training phases: PREP1, PREP2, and PREP3.

Wollongong Hospital, with over 500 beds, is the main referral and teaching hospital in the region, offering a wide range of services and rotations in specialties like Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, and more. The hospital is located on the NSW coast, south of Sydney.

Shellharbour Hospital is a 197-bed facility providing acute and community services, including emergency, surgical, medical, and mental health care. It is located on the NSW South Coast.

Bulli Hospital, associated with Bulli Aged Care Centre, opened in 2020, providing aged care, rehabilitation, and outpatient services. It is located nearby Wollongong.

The primary purpose of the BPT role is to deliver medical services under supervision while developing expertise in a complex environment. Rotations include various medical departments, with increasing autonomy as training progresses.

Responsibilities include assessing patients, discussing management plans, documenting progress, prescribing medications, and managing acutely unwell patients, among others.
