Role and responsibilities

The Psychiatrist will provide medical leadership to this senior team, which prides itself on the provision of innovative, collaborative, and best practice time-limited care to children and young people aged 0-17 years who are experiencing acute mental distress.
This role provides an opportunity to make a valuable impact to the community, which includes a significant Aboriginal population.
The Psychiatrist will work closely with the Team's Clinical Lead in building partnerships to ensure seamless provision of care for this population and will be actively involved in ongoing evaluation and development of the model of care.
The Safeguards Team is part of the well-established interdisciplinary Child Youth and Family Mental Health stream, with the portfolio including Child and Youth Mental Health Teams, Whole Family Team and Perinatal Infant Mental Health Team.
The new Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit is currently being built and will open later in 2025.
The Safeguards Team is expanding to provide care to the Blue Mountains and Lithgow region (NBMLHD encompasses the Penrith, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Lithgow regions).
Successful applicants will participate in a District-wide CYF-MH Consultant after-hours roster.
As negotiated with the Medical Director, the role may also include work in other parts of the Mental Health Service.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Possess or be eligible for: registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or equivalent as provided by the Health Insurance Act 1997; Certificate of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; current NSW driver's licence.
Demonstrated commitment to Continuing Professional Development and reflective practice.
Demonstrated expertise and experience in providing effective, high quality mental health services in a psychiatry setting; demonstrated commitment to person-centered, recovery oriented, family inclusive, trauma informed and need adapted principles of care.
Demonstrated ability to support and work in collaboratively interprofessional contexts that include lived-experience professionals; sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual domains.
Expertise and experience relevant to the position.
Demonstrated high level verbal and written communication ability including capacity to communicate clearly, inclusively, and respectfully.
Word processing skills necessary to complete expert documentation.
Demonstrated skill and commitment to the teaching and supervision of medical staff, non-medical colleagues, and students consistent with contemporary best practice; commitment to interprofessional learning.
Qualities, attitudes, and articulated values consistent with a senior medical practitioner providing mental health care to consumers across the age span and their social networks; and evidence of high ethical and professional standards.
Experience in or capacity for supporting quality improvement and clinical governance activities; and demonstrated commitment to high quality care provision in the public sector.
Familiarity with and support of basic, clinical, and applied research activities relevant to the needs of the Mental Health Service and its staff and the ability to draw on values and research concepts in the appraisal of evidence, guidelines, and quality improvement activities.

Conditions of appointment
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997, and Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Employees and Contractors must abide by the NSW Health Code of Conduct.
The position requires a Working with Children Check (WWCC) issued by the Office of the Children's Guardian.
