Overview
This position is linked to the Australian Composites Manufacturing CRC project "Standardising in-Field Manufacture of Composite Repairs to Steel Structures".
In this project you will investigate the capabilities of PAUT and MAUT NDT techniques to characterise damage in composite repairs due to environmental degradation and mechanical loading.
This research requires deep understanding of analytical and experimental ultrasonic NDT methods, demonstrated knowledge in advanced signal processing techniques and good understanding of emerging machine learning methodologies used in NDE.
You will work in close collaboration with project partners at the University of Western Australia and Fuze Solutions.
Salary: base range $114,824.05 - $136,048.72 + 17% Superannuation (Academic Level B).
Visa sponsorship is not available.
Based at the St Lucia Campus, Brisbane.
This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 21 months.
Employer: School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering – Faculty of EAIT, The University of Queensland.
The successful candidate is expected to prepare research reports, publish research outcomes in reputable journals, and carry out occasional administrative support duties.
The candidate is also encouraged to help pursue funding opportunities for the long-term continuation of this line of research.
Additionally, the position requires supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students.
Key Responsibilities

Research: Determine the capabilities of PAUT and MAUT to detect and characterise damage in composite repairs, collaborate with the CRC ACM project team, produce high-quality research outputs, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilise best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.
Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure the ethical conduct of research.
Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

Ph D in the field of ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation.
An emerging profile in research in the discipline area.
Demonstrated expert knowledge in analytical and experimental ultrasonics.
Good understanding of phased array ultrasonic testing.
Good understanding of machine learning methods used in NDT.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and establish a rapport and good working relationships with students, staff, and industry partners.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
An effective ability to time manage and prioritise demands.
High attention to detail and a methodical but expeditious approach to research work.
