About this role: A Learning Support Teacher isspecifically employed to work with students who need extra supportor require an advanced program of education, in order to completetheir learning successfully.
A key aspect of working in specialneeds is identifying individual needs and being responsible forcreating a safe, stimulating and supportive learningenvironment.
Job tasks and responsibilities: Assess theabilities and potential of students requiring a specificstudy program.
Referrals-organize a Teacher Referral Form and Parent Consent Form prior to providing supportsessions.
Writecognitive assessment referrals.
Complete the Parent Questionnaire for cognitive and languageassessments.
Providespecialist education advice to school principal and theteachers.
Create/organize an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student by collaborating with teacherswhich outlines the goals that she will work toward andassociated activities.
Develop andadapt the curriculum to make it relevant for students withdisabilities.
Prepare Lessons and resources for the students with special needsand at risk.
Teachacademic subjects and practical self-help skills eitherindividuals or small groups of students by using variousmethods within or outside the class.
Work veryclosely with other professionals, including speechtherapists and psychologists.
Organize the Psychologist for the cognitive assessments in conjunctionwith the Speech Pathologist.
Organizemeetings with Psychologist and parents to discuss cognitiveassessment results.
Feedback from Psychologist to be givento the Speech Pathologist.
Liaisingwith parents and teachers to provide feedback onstudents' progress.
Organizingand attending Parent Support Group (PSG)meetings.
Ensure ahigh standard of record keeping in relation to studentswith disabilities.
Attend inservices and meetings appropriate to the position and beknowledgeable about the range of students support andwelfare services and agencies in the local and widercommunity.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities: Tertiarydegree in a teaching discipline Current VITregistration Ability tointegrate IT into the curriculum and teachingpractice.
Interpersonal skills to effectivelycommunicate with students and colleagues Able tomanage pastoral issues relative to staff, students andparents through effective dialogue and process.
Well-developed report writing and oralcommunication skills.
