The Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department sits within the Planning Directorate, part of the City Futures Group, and takes a lead role in developing the strategic environment, natural hazards and sustainability policies, projects and plans to deliver healthy environments and sustainable outcomes.
Its functions are implemented across three branches including Sustainability Planning, Natural Hazards Planning and Biodiversity Planning.
Are you passionate about using spatial data to shape a sustainable future? We are seeking a Principal GIS Analyst to lead complex spatial and data analysis activities that support environmental and natural hazards planning and policy development.
This role plays a key part in informing evidence-based decision-making to foster healthy environments across our growing city.
You will: Lead the development and implementation of spatial data capture, metadata creation, and data governance processes.
Deliver innovative data analysis and visualisation solutions for diverse audiences.
Provide expert advice and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Support understanding of biodiversity, climate, and natural hazard risks through robust data analysis.
Manage work requests and contribute to planning and resource programming.
Mentor team members and deliver training on spatial data systems and best practices.
About you You are a highly skilled GIS professional with a passion for environmental sustainability and a strong analytical mindset.
You thrive in complex data environments and bring deep expertise in spatial data systems, modelling tools, and programming languages such as Python, SQL, and R.
Your ability to translate intricate data into clear, actionable insights sets you apart, and you're confident communicating these to diverse audiences.
With a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to continuous improvement, you're ready to lead innovative projects that support biodiversity, climate resilience, and natural hazards planning in a growing city.
What you will bring: Expertise in spatial data software and tools including Arc GIS Online/Enterprise, 3 D modelling, and data modelling languages (Python, SQL, R).
Strong communication skills to simplify complex data concepts.
Proven experience in project management and risk assessment.
Ability to lead and mentor others in a collaborative team environment.
Experience with Marxan and Zonation (highly desirable).
