Classics and Ancient History has a long-standing tradition at the University of Adelaide, where a Hughes Chair in Classics was established in 1874.
From 1 January 2026, Classics will be part of the Archaeology and Classical Studies major in the Bachelor of Arts program.
This position aligns with our new emphasis on the socio-cultural history of the Greek and Roman worlds.
The eight-course major includes topics in archaeological and historical methods, Classical and Australian archaeology, laboratory techniques, field methods, and socio-cultural aspects of the Mediterranean, including themes like Hellenization, mythology, and the origins of democracy.
Many courses involve comparative analysis with modern issues.
The successful candidate will primarily contribute to courses in Classical Studies.

To be successful, you will need: A Ph D in Ancient Greek or Roman History, focusing on cultural or social history.
Experience in coordinating and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Ancient History and/or Classical Studies.
A strong research record with high-quality publications and the ability to attract external research funding.
A proven track record of securing competitive grant funding and plans for future applications.
The ability to contribute positively to the culture and collegial environment of the School of Humanities and the Archaeology and Classical Studies program.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within academic teams.
