PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The General Manager - Venue Operations will provide effective leadership and management expertise to ensure the successful operation and financial performance of Netball Central. The General Manager - Venue Operations will ensure the venue operates in accordance with the venue management plan and that targets set in the Netball Central business plan are achieved (targets relevant to the position).

Reporting to: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

NETBALL NSW OVERVIEW

Netball NSW is a not-for-profit organisation, governed by a Board of Directors and managed by professional staff. Netball NSW is the peak state sporting organisation responsible for the governance, development, promotion and administration of netball throughout New South Wales and is a member organisation of Netball Australia.

Netball NSW provides the framework for approximately 115,000 registered members and over 150,000 total participants to enjoy netball at all levels throughout New South Wales. Our sport continues to grow both on and off the court and much of this success can be attributed to the wide range of programs, facilities and services Netball NSW offers to its members and participants - from the grassroots level through to the elite, professional level.

Netball NSW has a proud history of elite netball teams and athletes' performances in national and international competition. Over 300 athletes have proudly represented NSW in elite competition since the inception of the national netball league in 1997 and then the ANZ Championship. 2017 saw the introduction of the Suncorp Super Netball, the top Australian domestic competition which includes two NSW elite teams, the NSW Swifts and GIANTS Netball.

ABOUT NETBALL CENTRAL

Home of Netball NSW, NSW Swifts & Giants Netball

Netball Central is New South Wales's leading purpose-built netball facility, opening its doors to the public in 2015. Based in New South Wales's premier sporting precinct of Sydney Olympic Park, it is not only an elite netball facility, but also lends itself perfectly to hosting a wide range of community, corporate and sporting functions, and events.

It is home to Netball NSW, the governing body of netball in NSW, and is also the training base of our representative and elite netball teams, including the NSW Swifts and GIANTS Netball.

Netball Central has six state-of-the-art timber sprung floor courts, custom-made to support netball performance. The courts also lend themselves perfectly to other sporting activities including basketball, volleyball, badminton and more, as well as events such as dance recitals, performing arts rehearsals, trade shows and exhibitions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Develop strategic business and operational plans that align to, and deliver on, Netball NSW's strategic direction.
  • Manage relevant operating agreements, leases and contracts with hirers, service providers and tenants.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with the venue owner (Sydney Olympic Park Authority) ensuring adherence to the Management Agreement and delivering timely reporting and communications as required.
  • Establish safe work practices and ensure strict compliance with the relevant WHS requirements for all staff, contractors, hirers and visitors whilst on site.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant regulations governing the safe operation of Netball Central.
  • Represent Netball NSW on relevant committees and groups as required.
  • Develop, implement and manage administrative processes, procedures and policies to ensure effective management of financial, human resources and records management systems in operation of Netball Central.
  • Develop and drive a culture that adheres to Netball NSW values.

Business Development

  • Develop and implement plans and strategies to acquire and retain new business.
  • Forge positive and effective working relationships with key stakeholders, contractors and tenants and communicate effectively with them to ensure minimum standards of service are met and positive arrangements relating to venue operations are maintained.
  • Work collaboratively with the CFO and other Executive staff to develop innovative, viable and tangible promotions and marketing concepts to assist in the commercialisation of the venue in regards to Netball NSW affiliated content.
  • Identify opportunities to increase commercial outcomes of Netball Central and work collaboratively with internal Netball NSW departments to deliver strategies to achieve identified outcomes.
  • Ensure venue hire revenue targets and utilisation rates are achieved by proactively sourcing venue hire business from a wide range of prospective user groups and activities – acknowledging that Netball NSW bookings take priority.
  • Ensure that Netball Central has sufficient content to maintain financial viability.

Operational Management

  • Oversee monthly WHS Audit Checklist provided by direct reports.
  • Ensure daily venue opening and closing checklists are completed and emailed to relevant parties.
  • Day-to-day management and responsibility for the implementation of the venue management plan for Netball Central.
  • Maintain and review relevant venue systems including booking, point of sale and ticketing.
  • Liaise with Netball NSW Competitions and High Performance staff with regards to ensuring that their requirements of the facility are met in terms of court and function bookings and venue readiness.
  • Management of the venue's booking system. Maintain an up to date booking system and calendar of events and ensure that all relevant internal and external stakeholder groups are kept up to date on all activities within the facility.
  • Oversee venue operations and logistics for a variety of venue hirers and users including internal departments and special events.
  • Coordinate and chair fortnightly venue operations meetings.
  • Coordinate and chair bi-monthly WHS Committee Meetings.
  • Manage the Liquor License for Netball Central and act as Licensee (On-Premises License).
  • Oversee all IT related upgrades and projects (with support from Venue Operations and Contractor Coordinator). Manage all IT infrastructure upgrades/replacements with the IT Contractor in communication with the CFO.
  • Work closely with the Emergency Management Consultant and program relevant Emergency Planning Committee Meetings.
  • Ensure 6 & 12 monthly Emergency Management Training is programmed and logged for all NNSW staff and tenants as per current legislation.

Event Management

  • Be responsible for the provision of efficient and professional service to all internal and external event and function customers to ensure exceptional venue experience.
  • Work collaboratively with the venue team to deliver all events and major bookings held at Netball Central.

Facility Management

  • In conjunction with facility contractors budget for and program specific tasks with regards to the venue's Asset Management Plan.
  • Ensure that compliance obligations are met across a range of building services and assets.
  • Implement, administer and monitor effective venue operations policies and procedures.
  • In conjunction with facility contractors, ensure that appropriate service contracts are in place.
  • Comply with all Netball NSW and Venue specific risk management policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate and manage major and minor project works within the venue ensuring compliance is maintained at all times.
  • Manage tenants based inside the venue.
  • Complete appropriate courses and attain all applicable licenses required (e.g venue liquor license).

Reporting & Financial Management

  • Responsible for preparation of the annual venue budget.
  • Provide regular reports with regards to the operations, usage and financial performance of the venue.
  • Ensure that financial controls and policies are adhered to at all times.
  • Identify opportunities for capital maintenance programs and develop business cases for consideration.
  • Management of specific venue budget items.

Staffing Management

  • Management of direct reports.
  • Ensure that staff know their obligations with regards to Work, Health and Safety legislation and that venue emergency management plans are updated as required and disseminated to all venue users.
  • Provide performance appraisals for direct reports.
  • Hold regular meetings with direct reports and venue staff to inform them of any issues that need to be addressed and give constructive feedback on their performance.
  • Ensure that the venue has appropriate staff numbers on duty at all times in conjunction with venue booking requirements.

General

  • Present all Venue Operations and IT related matters at NNSW team meetings.
  • Attend or present at ELT meetings on an adhoc basis when requested.
  • Abide by, promote and actively enforce Netball NSW policies.
  • Actively participate and be part of the Netball NSW Team.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Chief Executive Officer or Chief Financial Officer

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates for the position will require a range of personal and professional skills including:

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in stadium, leisure and/or venue operations management.
  • Experience managing a similar leisure or sporting facility to Netball Central.
  • Ability to demonstrate successful leadership and staff management from previous roles.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Work Health & Safety practices.
  • Experience in meeting revenue targets and managing budgets.
  • Involvement in a sports oriented organisation.
  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications are desirable.
  • Current drivers license.

Knowledge and skills

  • Strong marketing, business development, administration, and staff management skill
  • Strong analytical and business negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, building services and maintenance management.
  • Knowledge of venue management systems including, but not limited to, access control, CCTV and AV.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current best practice and trends within the events and venue management environment.
  • Understanding the differing needs of clients within an indoor sporting environment particularly in relation to netball, volleyball and basketball.
  • Ability to set priorities, plan work programs, meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, liaison, negotiation, conflict resolution and active listening.
  • Competence with the Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Current Senior First Aid certificate including the competent use of a defibrillator.
