Position Information:


Lawrence Hargrave School is located in South-Western Sydney, the school supports students from Years 7-12 who have mild-intellectual disability, complex behaviours and a recognised mental health condition.

Approximately 30% of students identify as Aboriginal, 15% are in OoHC, and 22% required support in the form of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D).

Our Family Occupational Education Index (FOEI) is currently 218.


The school provides a trauma informed approach and is committed to delivering specific and individualised learning programs for each student.

Students enrolment is capped at 63, allowing for 9 separate classes to exist within a maximum of 7 students in each class coupled with a class teacher and learning support officer.


Selection Criteria:

In addition to the general selection criteria,

  • Approval to teach special education and/or experience leading the teaching of students with special needs including intellectual disabilities, challenging behaviours, and emotional regulation difficulties.
  • Experience and skills in delivering and supporting whole school programs and initiatives that contribute to student wellbeing and engagement.
  • Collaborate with school executives and teachers to strengthen literacy and numeracy initiatives including the development of professional practice in schoolwide assessment and programming.
  • Demonstrate capacity to work as a member of the executive to lead a team within the school improvement plan, including evaluating and reflecting for continual improvement.
  • Demonstrate capacity to engage NSW Department of Education specialists and other services in the community to strengthen students' post school options.

General Selection Criteria:

  • Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
  • Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
  • Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
  • Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
