Position Information:

Whalan Public School has a current enrolment of 400 students, including 40 preschool students and 4 support classes.

Aboriginal students make up 30% of the school population and 35% of students come from language backgrounds other than English.

The school applies principals of Positive Behaviour for Learning, with high expectations for student engagement and achievement. Teachers at the school value collaboration and are supported by instructional and curriculum leaders.

Selection Criteria:

In addition to the general selection criteria,


Approval to teach Special Education and/or extensive experience and a passion for teaching students with autism spectrum disorder, mild to moderate intellectual disability and students with complex needs.


Demonstrated capacity to lead a support unit and effectively manage dual roles of Assistant Principal and exemplary classroom teacher with a deep knowledge of curriculum, and development of high quality individual educational learning programs.


Proven ability to differentiate and make adjustments to curriculum to promote engagement and learning: including the use of technology and alternate programs to build a sustainable, dynamic and positive school learning environment.


Demonstrated high-level interpersonal skills with the ability to work in collaborative teams, foster positive relationships, and support and mentor staff in developing and implementing effective practices to drive continuous improvement.


General Selection Criteria:

  • Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
  • Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
  • Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
  • Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
