Canberra, ACT, Australia Murray-Darling Basin Authority Full time
  • Location: Canberra, Goondiwindi, Griffith, Mildura, or Wodonga

Join us to shape the future of Australia's precious natural resource and safeguard it for the generations to come.

We are searching for individuals eager to contribute to a substantial water improvement initiative that addresses climate change impacts, supports community and industry requirements, and enhances water accessibility for First Nations people.

The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA), in collaboration with Basin governments, oversees the water resources of the Murray–Darling Basin in the national interest. Established as an independent statutory agency under the Water Act 2007, the MDBA cultivates a robust and sustainable Basin ecosystem.

Our goal at MDBA is to maintain a thriving and sustainable Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin boasts diverse natural habitats unique to Australia and the world. It is a vital component of Australia's economy, home to 2.3 million Australians, and hosts people from over 50 First Nations. Our management of the Basin as an interconnected system, careful water resource management, and protection are outlined in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

The Role

The Director of Economics will spearhead the delivery of an economics knowledge base, crucial in supporting MDBA's Basin Plan requirements, with immediate attention to the 2026 Basin Plan Review. The incumbent will oversee MDBA's economics research investment program, manage external economics partnerships, and ensure that the economics program aligns with the policy, planning, and engagement needs of the Basin Plan Review. This position entails close collaboration with partners in the Basin Science & Knowledge division, as well as with the policy, planning, and communications/engagement teams at MDBA. Furthermore, cooperation with various Australian Government agencies, research partners, Basin States and Territories, and First Nations and broader stakeholders is essential.

An integral aspect of this role is to guarantee that the economics investment aligns with MDBA's strategic objectives. The incumbent must establish effective relationships within the organization, distilling complex economics data into synthesized products that address diverse policy queries.

Economics information will play a pivotal public role within MDBA's scientific framework during the Basin Plan Review, attracting significant attention from various interest groups. As a result, the incumbent must ensure the accuracy and quality of economics information through exposure to a wide range of stakeholders such as major industry organizations, Basin governments, and the broader water-conscious community utilizing MDBA's established engagement channels.

Your primary responsibilities in this role include

  • Oversee MDBA's economics research investment program, data collection, analysis, and interpretation efforts
  • Lead internal and external economics relationships at MDBA, collaborating with partners in the broader science program, policy & planning, and communications/engagement team
  • Summarize and simplify economics information for MDBA's use, focusing on supporting the requirements of the Basin Plan Review, specifically in policy/planning and communications/engagement areas
  • Provide strategic guidance on science, research, and knowledge across the Murray-Darling Basin in conjunction with the General Manager and Science Acquisition colleagues
  • Demonstrate advanced communication skills, including creating agenda papers, presentations, and briefing notes for MDBA Executive, Governing Panels, Steering Committees, and high-level Committees as necessary
What we offer
  • You will engage in projects that contribute to molding the future of one of Australia's crucial natural resources, securing it for future generations.
  • At MDBA, you will tackle various engaging and challenging assignments, utilizing your expertise to aid the Australian community in supporting a vital resource management program.
  • Competitive compensation packages, including up to 15.4% superannuation, and recognition of previous APS government service.
  • Generous leave allowances (four weeks of annual leave) with additional Non-attendance days during the holiday season.
  • Participate in a smaller agency with a strong focus on human connections.
  • Join a professional, dedicated, and amicable team.
  • Work within an organization that appreciates and values First Nations individuals and their contributions, with an innovative Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) enhancing relationships, demonstrating respect, and increasing opportunities for outcomes related to First Nations peoples in day-to-day operations.
  • Benefit from Competitive Flexible Working Arrangements for better work-life balance, requiring 40% office attendance.
  • Access a range of wellness programs and provisions, promoting a healthy lifestyle.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and advancement across diverse roles and locations.
