Canberra, ACT, Australia Australian Department of Defence Full time

Strategy, Policy, and Industry Group is looking for a number of Policy, Analyst, or Program Directors to contribute to the Department of Defence's key policy and national security functions to protect and further Australia's national interests.

Your role would be to lead teams to strengthen Australia's national security and economic resilience by devising long-term strategy and policies to guide and align Defence – direct Defence's international engagement; enhance ADF capability and decisions; regulate military and dual-use exports in the national interest; and help build a sovereign industrial base, including through innovation.

Although the Director roles in Strategy, Policy, and Industry Group are highly varied, they all involve leading and developing high-performing teams to deliver national security and economic resilience objectives. Your team's work could range from preparing the Minister to conduct talks with their international counterparts on Defence strategic policies or military engagement, working with the Australian Defence Force to provide policy guidance for operations, scanning the horizon to assess emerging strategic issues, guiding industry to better meet Defence requirements, assuring the Minister and Defence that capability investment proposals are defensible and affordable, assessing applications from industry or researchers to share military technology with overseas customers and collaborators, or managing the assessment of innovation project to enhance Defence capability.

No two days would be the same – guiding your team's work, mentoring your team members, conducting meetings to support and influence stakeholders, briefing Defence's Senior Leadership, consulting with other government agencies, industry stakeholders and the public, or contributing to corporate transformational change.

About our Team

We are a fully integrated civilian-military workforce, drawing on high-quality and motivated people from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines who embody Defence and Australian Public Service values.

We offer flexible working arrangements and a range of formal and informal professional development opportunities. While we offer a high degree of flexibility in the way we work, each position is located in Canberra. As such, successful applicants from outside Canberra, would need to move to Canberra if successful.

Working within Strategy, Policy, and Industry Group is more than just a job; it offers opportunities over the course of a career to work across diverse national security and policy matters of national significance. We actively support mobility within the Group when the time is right but we also value our people developing their expertise in specific areas.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking motivated, enthusiastic and collaborative Policy, Analyst or Program Directors to join our Group, and contribute to our strategic goals.

To succeed in Strategy, Policy, and Industry Group, applicants require:

  • Strong background in research and analysis and demonstrated critical thinking abilities;
  • Well-honed and demonstrated leadership and people skills;
  • Sound judgment with an innovative approach to problem solving;
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills;
  • Adaptability, resilience, and flexibility in the face of changing priorities.

Application Closing Date: Monday 20 May, 2024
