About the Role:

The Sonographer performs basic imaging examinations and ultrasound examinations, and novel or complex imaging procedures in ultrasound, to facilitate patient diagnosis, clinical management and care, without supervision, to contemporary professional standards.

  • Perform basic imaging procedures.
  • Perform novel, complex and critical imaging procedures, exercising professional judgement within ultrasound.
  • Undertake a lead role in the supervision and training of less experienced staff performing duties within ultrasound, ensuring that acceptable contemporary professional standards are maintained.
  • Participate in and significantly contribute to the design and updating of protocols and duty guidelines for work practices performed within ultrasound, ensuring compliance with work practices.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of new techniques and advances within ultrasound.
  • Implement, review and report on quality improvement, quality assurance, education and research activities and projects as required.
  • Deputise for the Senior Specialist Sonographer as required.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

About You:

The Sonographer is responsible for:

  • Patient welfare and standard of care received, by using imaging equipment and associated accessories safely, avoiding causing hazards to themselves, other staff, patients and equipment.
  • Implementation of ALARA principles to achieve the optimum diagnostic result, by the selection of appropriate equipment, technical factors and accessories.
  • Maintaining professional levels of patient care and comply with moral and ethical codes.
  • Ensuring the optimum diagnostic outcome of examinations performed by less experienced staff.
  • Maintaining ongoing 'Accredited Medical Sonographer' status with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.
  • Where applicable, exercising delegations in accordance with a range of Acts, Regulations, Awards, administrative authorities and functional arrangements as mandated by Statutory office holders including the Secretary and Head of State Service. The relevant Unit Manager can provide details to the occupant of delegations applicable to this position.
  • Complying at all times with policy and protocol requirements, including those relating to mandatory education, training and assessment.
  • Actively participating in and contributing to the organisation's Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.

Essential requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification/program of study approved by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry
  • Accredited with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry and if also practising as a radiographer, registered with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia

  • Permanent full time, day worker (with on call) position working 76 hours per fortnight

  • Open to consider 1-3 months short term assignment, day worker - 5 days per week but hours are flexible and on call is available
