The Western Power strategy is driven by an ambitious and forward-focused vision: Working together to power a cleaner energy future.

We are embarking on a journey towards a brighter, more sustainable future. Join us and be at the forefront of powering change.

Are you interested in joining a team that's shaping Western Australia's transition into the era of green energy?

The team/department
You will be joining Western Power's Network Control team within our Network Operations Function.

Distribution Network Controllers are accountable for three main activities; managing the network in real time, facilitating planned network access, and managing faults and emergencies.

The team works on a 24/7 roster to manage one of the largest islanded electricity networks in the world.

The Network Operations Control room has been in existence since 1994 and are a strong workforce of 50. The teams are spread across two locations - Perth CBD and Forrestfield (approx. 20kms from Perth CBD).

Our Distribution Network Controllers are split into five shift families (four team members per shift), due to the teams working so closely together there is a real sense of teamwork and camaraderie.

The teams are also supported/mentored by the Leadership team who have been in the business many years.

Development is key within our organisation so every five weeks, our Controllers are given 12.5 hours of professional development time and regular training.

Callum, Network Controller:

"My family immigrated to Western Australia in January 2024, with the help of Western Power. I had worked for a DNO (Distribution Network Operator) in the UK for 17 years as a Network Controller. Once we decided that we wanted to make the move and I had been accepted for the role, things moved quickly, and we were in Australia in around 6 months.

As part of my contract, I was offered an excellent relocation package.

Western Power helped with most aspects of relocation - visa's for my whole family, flights, shipping all of my belongings & temporary accommodation.

This took away a lot of the worry of making a move like this."

What you will be doing

As a Distribution Network Controller, you'll be:

  • At the forefront of managing the Southwest Interconnected Network, ensuring its safe, reliable, and efficient operation
  • From allowing access to the network to facilitate planned work to rapidly managing emergency events, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the energy landscape of tomorrow.
  • You will also be required to make immediate independent decisions to maintain network integrity to ensure the network is operated within the technical rules and ensure compliance obligations, employee and public safety requirements are met.

What you will get from the role

  • Work in modern purposebuilt control room in the Perth CBD.
  • Enjoy a continuous, rotating shift pattern that provides a 5day break at the completion of each shift pattern.
  • Be part of the transition to green energy by using initiative processes and IT systems.
  • Manage the electricity network using GE's ADMS system, Power on Advantage.
  • Professional development opportunities to progress your career in the real time control environment with advancement options to transmission control or to the control room leadership team.
