Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Science Analyst on a contract for 10 months with potential extension.

Position Overview

The duties of this position include:

  • leading a multi-disciplinary team to provide scientific and technical assistance to the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on coal seam gas and large coal mining development (IESC) within strict statutory timeframes
- leading a multi-disciplinary team to provide scientific analysis and critique of information and data provided by a proponent, and other relevant scientific information, as requested by the Department, within statutory timeframes;
- working autonomously, as required, to achieve high quality scientific and technical advice;
- attendance at meetings of the IESC and with state agencies, proponents, consultants and site visits as required (note this will involve interstate travel including to remote locations);
- presentations to the IESC and state agencies, proponents and consultants, as well as conferences and workshops (potentially interstate), as required;
- oversee IESC-initiated research projects;
- complete administrative tasks, as required, to ensure smooth operational procedures; and
- support the Departmental and Divisional Executive to deliver the outcomes, objectives and key result areas of the branch and OWS;

  • A demonstrated ability to work autonomously, and with attention to detail, within a multidisciplinary


OWS also supports the Department more generally by providing scientific analysis and advice on the water-related impacts across a diverse range of development projects including irrigated agriculture, infrastructure and right across the resources sector from the referral to post-approval stage.

Skills and capabilities

We are seeking someone who has:

  • Scientific experience preferably in groundwater (hydrogeology) but other scientific disciplines will be considered
  • biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, hydrology or physics.
  • Good people management, organisational and communication skills, including the ability to integrate across multiple projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • A demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret complex scientific information, with experience assessing and integrating scientific information relating to environmental impacts being an advantage.
  • Good communication and writing skills; including a demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in plain English to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in the review, assessment and integration of information contained within reports and other literature pertaining to scientific assessments.
  • A demonstrated ability to work autonomously, and with attention to detail, within a multidisciplinary
scientific team under tight timeframes.

  • A suitable science degree or postgraduate qualifications.
