The Discipline Inquiry Officer has the responsibility of inquiring into and determining charges of misconduct against police officers.

Your duties will include:

  • Ensure all aspects of the Victoria Police discipline inquiry function are managed efficiently and in accordance with relevant legislation and common law principles.
  • Impartially preside over inquiries, assess evidence and submissions and make sound judgements.
  • Ensure that the prehearing processes are utilised effectively to expedite inquiries.
  • Ensure strong governance models are adopted for all aspects of the function resulting in timely, fair, wellreasoned and consistent outcomes.
  • Provide expert guidance and advice to Victoria Police Executive Command on the review of practices, guidelines and trends relating to and emerging from discipline inquiries.
  • Lead the development and ongoing assessment of effective and efficient policies, practices and services that enhance organisational capacity around discipline investigations and other processes.
  • Build strong partnerships with all stakeholders and ensure an understanding of community, member and organisational expectations and consult with appropriate stakeholders in developing plans and strategies.
  • Provide management, guidance and leadership to staff under the Discipline Inquiry Officer's supervision.
  • Promote the integrity of, and community confidence in, Victoria Police's disciplinary processes.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Extensive experience in conducting complex and sensitive hearings and determining outcomes consistent with relevant legislative and industrial requirements.
  • Advanced written and verbal communications skills along with conceptual thinking and sound analytical approaches to support decision making.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, influence and interact with a range of stakeholders and build trust in the delivery of fair and reasonable outcomes in disciplinary hearing matters.

Qualifications:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
  • Possess a current Australian practising certificate which authorises the holder to supervise legal practice by others.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x fulltime, ongoing position available.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo preemployment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
