About QIMR Berghofer:
QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Mental Health and Neuroscience, and Population Health.
Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.
QIMR Berghofer Animal Ethics Committee (QIMR-Berghofer AEC) reviews research projects carried out by QIMR Berghofer researchers.The role of the AEC is ensure that the care and use of animals for scientific purposes is ethically acceptable and that research involving animals are carried out in accordance with the National standards as set out by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council.
Committee meetings are collegial and their function is to bring together various perspectives of members to consider the ethical implications of each research proposal.
Role Purpose / Responsibilities:
Applications are invited for people interested in joining our Animal Ethics Committee in the capacity of:
Animal Carer:
a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
Lay members:
Community members who have no affiliation with QIMR Berghofer, and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education.
Applicants should have an interest in and commitment to scientific research and willing to acquire an understanding of the principles underpinning ethical research.
About the role
The appointment is for an initial period of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

This is a volunteer position. Parking will be provided at Herston for members while on QIMR Berghofer-AEC business. All essential expenses incurred by members in carrying out their duties will be reimbursed.
