We are looking for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individual with solid Program and Contract Management expertise, and demonstrated engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This role requires a deep understanding of the cultural significance of Traditional Owners to the Great Barrier Reef. The position will collaborate closely with Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners and other First Nations individuals, including remote communities and organizations established to support First Nations people and businesses.

This role falls within the TUMRA Section, which oversees Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements (TUMRA) and Sea Country Values Mapping Programs.

This Assistant Director role entails offering strategic support to the TUMRA Section, providing direction to the team. This necessitates the ability to develop and lead an inclusive, dynamic, and innovative team, setting the stage for transformative change. Representing the team to cultivate a strong and enduring partnership with Traditional Owners to supervise the negotiation, development, and execution of multi-jurisdictional traditional sea country estate management aligned with Traditional Owner aspirations, self-determination, and cultural heritage protection.

The key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Provide strategic and operational advice on Traditional Owner matters related to Marine Park management.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives, monitor risks, and execute annual plans and budgets to meet objectives.
  • Collaborate to deliver policies, projects, and solutions that ensure the protection and conservation of the Reef.
  • Liaise, consult, and negotiate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups on Marine Park management issues.
  • Contribute to Reef Authority objectives and engage in cross-sectional work and emerging issues as part of the broader leadership team.

  • Hold or be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.

Essential requirements:

  • Hold a current unrestricted Queensland Drivers Licence (preferably with 4-wheel drive experience) or be able to acquire one within 6 months.
Desirable qualifications or equivalent experience:
  • Diploma in Program Management, Project Management, Procurement qualifications, or equivalent experience.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of social science, marine park/marine protected area/sea country management, including traditional use.
  • Ability to travel, sometimes overnight or for multiple days, including to remote and regional locations.
