Harmony is the largest gold producer in South Africa and is a major operator of gold tailings retreatment facilities. In Papua New Guinea, Harmony owns and operates the Hidden Valley mine and holds a 50% stake in the Tier 1 Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project. Harmony has recently acquired 100% of the Eva Copper project, a near-term copper project in Queensland, Australia. These assets are supported by the Harmony SE Asia regional corporate office located in Milton, Brisbane.


As the Payroll Team Leader, reporting to the Manager - Financial Services, you will be responsible for leading the end-to-end payroll function and staff involved in processing all payroll transactions and payments. This role will involve overseeing payroll operations and compliance, including supervising two direct reports.


The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Leading the team and managing end-to-end payroll across multiple entities (Australia and PNG) for over 1000+ staff, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Overseeing payroll operations, including calculations, deductions, taxes, and compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Developing and implementing payroll policies, procedures, and best practices to enhance efficiency.
  • Conducting regular audits to ensure data accuracy and compliance with company policies and regulations.
  • Monitoring the correctness, eligibility, and timeliness of payments based on Awards, EBA's, Employment Contracts, and other relevant legislation.
  • Assisting in enhancing Harmony's payroll system and procedures.
  • Supervising payroll staff, providing training and development, and conducting performance reviews.
  • Ensuring accurate preparation of various returns and reconciliations.
  • Staying updated on payroll regulations and industry trends.
  • Liaising with auditors and resolving payroll queries across the company.


About You:

  • To excel in this role, you should be self-motivated with at least 6 years of experience in Payroll, including leadership roles. Tertiary qualifications in Payroll, Finance, or Accounting are advantageous.
  • You should have knowledge of legislative requirements, Industrial Awards, payroll systems, and strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with computerized payroll systems are essential.
