Our local council based in Sydney is looking for a Governance Manager for a 12 month contract to lead and manage the governance functions of the Council, focusing on interpreting laws, developing policies, implementing them, reviewing ongoing processes, handling delegations, ensuring compliance, and engaging with stakeholders.

Key Requirements:

Relevant qualifications or extensive experience in Business Administration, Law, Local Government, or related fields.

Significant experience in Local Government Governance, statutory interpretation, policy development, and coordinating governance reviews.

Strong leadership skills to develop and implement governance initiatives, ensure legislative compliance, and lead policy implementation.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders effectively.

Ability to work under pressure, manage time efficiently, and lead a team in a politically sensitive environment.

Responsibilities Include:

Establishing and maintaining a robust governance framework.

Translating strategic priorities into governance policies.

Leading and managing key governance initiatives.

Providing expert advice on statutory interpretation and policy development.

Engaging internal and external stakeholders for effective governance.

Managing governance registers and Council reporting.

Planning and managing the governance team's budget.

Leading, motivating, and managing staff to meet Council's principles and goals.
