A key role for the Department is to strengthen communities and regions by fostering local economic growth and implementing good governance, including in Australia's external Territories.

The Australian Government, through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (the Department) administers the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, the Jervis Bay Territory and Norfolk Island.

The Department also manages the Government's interests in the Australian Capital Territory, and the Northern Territory.

The opportunity we have available


The Territories Capital and Major Projects (TCMP) team primarily delivers infrastructure projects related to Australia's external territories of Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (which make up the Indian Ocean Territories or IOT), and Norfolk Island, as well as the Jervis Bay Territory on the mainland.

What will you do?


As part of its role the TCMP team is responsible for managing and delivering a broad range of complex capital investment projects and procurement and management of complex service management contracts in the Indian Ocean territories, Norfolk Island and Jervis Bay Territory.


You will be expected to work with internal and external stakeholders to manage projects and contracts across the Indian Ocean territories, or more broadly across all territories.


The Project Officer's key duties include:

  • Undertake various project management tasks for the delivery of capital investment projects, under limited supervision;-
  • Undertake various contract management tasks for the delivery of services within the territories, under limited supervision;-
  • Assist in the engagement and management of external contractors and specialist advisers to ensure successful project delivery;-
  • Undertake project and contract reporting for your team as required (including some financial reporting);-
  • Assist in the preparation of briefs, minutes and other relevant internal documentation for Senior Executive, Boards and Committee's as required; and-
  • Provide overall support to the Ports Project Director, the TCMP Director and the TCMP team as directed.
Who are we looking for?

Demonstrated experience in similar roles would be advantageous. Relevant professional qualifications will also be considered.

Other attributes will include:

  • Experience and knowledge in project and contract management, particularly in a Government context;
  • Application of technical knowledge and experience to identify required tasks;
  • A sound understanding of project and contract budgeting;
  • Ability to work well with team members;Ability to work autonomously and accurately;
  • Strong administrative skills with attention to detail;
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal;
  • Energetic, enthusiastic and keen; and
  • Ability to work at high tempo for short periods and complete tasks on short notice.
