Projects, Policy and Law Reform Solicitor

JOB DESCRIPTION:
HALC is seeking a full-time Projects, Policy and Law Reform Solicitor for a full-time 12 month contract.
The primary responsibilities of the Projects, Policy and Law Reform Solicitor are to:
- Facilitate the publication, development and update of HALC guides and publications including instructional/educational publications and publications about the centre, such as the annual report
- Initiate and participate in the development of legal and/or public policy concerned with HIV and/or hepatitis including identifying suitable public interest cases to maximise the potential for law reform
- Work collaboratively with other community legal centres and organisations both within NSW and interstate on law reform and policy advocacy work
- Assist in research and contribute to the preparation of submissions, reports, recommendations and commentaries regarding law and administrative reform issues
- Lead the implementation and delivery of community legal projects and education
- Assist in the development and delivery of community legal education programs through the provision of legal education and training sessions for legal practitioners, community workers and other organisation
- From time to time provide legal advice to clients, community organisations and support
Essential:
- Admitted to legal practice in New South Wales
- Demonstrated understanding of the legal issues affecting people living with HIV and hepatitis and priority groups considered at risk
- Ability to think critically about Australia's legal system and the way in which people living with HIV and hepatitis engage with Australia's legal system
- Demonstrated experience in undertaking high quality policy research and analysis
- Strong writing skills, including the ability to develop and tailor documents to their intended audiences
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice and empathy with the Centre's client groups, including people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people living with disabilities (including mental illness), people who identify as LGBTQI+, people who use drugs and people at significant social and economic disadvantage
- Ability to work as part of a team in a cooperative work environment including supporting and working with volunteers
Desirable:
- Tertiary qualifications related to policy, public health or related areas
- Social media skills
